Album Notes

It had been a long time since my last instrumental jazz album. I thought it would be nice to do another one someday, but I had no actual plans. Of course, the creative process doesn’t necessarily need plans for things to happen. So goes the story of "Lucky Numbers."

It was July 4th, 2006. I walked into a local music store with some equipment I no longer needed. I knew they bought used stuff, but I figured I wouldn’t get a lot of money for it. I could have put it on eBay, but I didn’t want to wait around for a week. I just wanted to get rid of it that day. Anyway, to make a long story short, I ended up with some cash, and a new acoustic guitar. It wasn’t an expensive guitar, but it was brand new. In fact, it was my first new acoustic guitar in 25 years, so I was pretty jazzed.

When I got home, the first thing I did (this is a no brainer) was pull my new guitar out of the case, and start playing. I don’t know how, but I just started playing a new song. By the end of the day I had written several tunes. I thought about writing some lyrics, but the music sounded like it would work well on its own.

I started recording the basic tracks for what would become the unplanned instrumental jazz album. I ended up using 11 new tunes, and 2 previously unrecorded pieces from some years back. 13 tracks in all. I thought 13 might be bad luck, and being mildly superstitious, I decided to call the album “Lucky Numbers.” That should balance things out. Who knows, it might even bring you some good luck (purchase required).
