ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Jay Hoad's debut CD features Hoad’s creative multi-genre compositions which blend funk, rock, reggae, latin, pop and jazz with traditional Australian influences punctuated by dynamic horn infused arrangements and unique blends of instrumentation.

The majority of the CD's songs were written while on tour in Australia and then recorded in the US in 2008. Hoad’s composition "Rat Race" was a recent runner up in the 2008 Australian Songwriter’s Association competition. Song lyrics, although delivered in a fun and exciting manner, focus on the very real issues concerning the well being of our beautiful planet along with additional controversial subjects including political contradiction and other random observations culled from world travels.

On the CD Jay plays electric and acoustic bass, didgeridoo, acoustic and electric guitar, lap steel guitar, drums and percussion, as well as providing all the lead vocals.

In addition to Jay, featured musicians on the CD comprise members of both the American and Australian touring bands including but not limited to:

Jim Miller - trumpet
Mat Long - guitar
Tim "Bos" O'brien - sax and flute
Pete Bozick - guitar
E. Shawn Qaissaunee - guitar
Mike Shockley - percussion
Zach Scudlark - sax
Dean Haemel - drums
Ria Loof - backing vocals
Shaun Doddy - percussion

The physical CD includes a 12-page booklet featuring original artwork as well as lyrics for all the songs!

Recent published reviews:

"...Every so often, the discerning music listener is lucky enough to come across an album that stands a cut above the rest and shines as something truly brilliant...From rock to reggae, blues to funk and everything in between, this is raw talent at its best!"
- Rip It Up magazine, Australia

"...This funky first offering has a very unique flavour, moulding jazz funk and reggae elements with roots into an accomplished collection of tracks. The combination of genres...allows the band to incorporate a brilliant array of sounds and musicians with each bringing an extraordinary energy to the often complacent roots genre."
- dB magazine, Australia

This band is incredibly amazing, wonderful, and so deep! Jay is, as I quote my best friend, a beautiful soul. All you need is one listen to fall in love with the music, people, and band. Jay’s music is so universal and just so, so gorgeous. The lyrics are emotive, getting you deep down in place that only certain people know how to touch. Silhouette makes me feel like I'm a kid again playing in the back yard with my baby sister--especially since we both loved to "make things out of the clouds" and swing on our tire swing under a great big willow tree and dance through the branches. I cried the first time I heard it. Thank you Jay for bringing back so many great memories I thought were lost! You can’t replicate days/memories like that, but his music sure makes you see it, relive it in your mind. I love you guys! Sunday morning avenue…oh, I have a few favorite tattoos! (Take your pick) Get Down Tonight is just so sexy. I Love It! And Rat Race…As an environmentalist, avid recycler and organic foodie, I feel this song depicts how sad it is that the fate of our planet is so readily dislodged by ignorance. Thank you for bringing this topic to attention Jay (Amy’s right, you are such a beautiful soul—but don’t loose the hair!). You were AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME live at the Rudder! It was the first time I’ve gotten so “loose” while dancing to Flame to the Rhythm! And on the Live at Zogg’s CD, I love Fishing Blues…it reminds me of all the times I went fishing my dad—again, the memories thing…They say a scent can spark a memory long buried, well so can Jay’s Music! Love it, Love it, Love it! Can't wait for the next one!

I hope that all can have the opportunity and experience to see and hear Jay in person, either solo or w/ the full band. He is a rare talent. He is passionate about his music, and loves what he does. This is displayed effortlessly through the stories of his journies that he shares in his creativity and evolving craft. We miss him very much in the US. Always, your student and friend D xoxo :)
