Born and raised in North Carolina, Jay was blessed to grow up in a Christian environment where Gospel music was always the norm.

It was from witnessing the singing and testimonies of artists like Archie Brownlee, Sam Cooke (to whom many say that Jay's voice bears a striking resemblance), Ira Tucker and Lou Rawls,that Jay developed his own style of singing Gospel music.
