Album Notes

Jayne Alison is a 50-something writer who has dabbled in music as a way to channel the emotional roller-coaster (or is it more like a merry-go-round? or high-wire tightrope act?) of her life as a single parent still searching for romantic love. It explores the minefields of online dating, surviving single-hood -- all with wit and wisdom, never quite stepping over the line into bitterness or despair. The album was produced by her son, Ryan Hommel, and his music buddy Seth Glier, both of whom helped arrange and also play all the instruments on the album and provide some of the background vocals. Jayne's friends, Joan Robb and Terry Rooney, who inspired two of the characters in Jayne's novel (also called "A Lot Like Life," which was written around these ten songs) can also be heard singing background vocals.

Jayne Allisons music is lighthearted and fun, never taking herself too seriously. Her songs tell a story that goes along with her new book...such a clever concept. She could have had professional singers perform the songs but then it wouldn't be as realistic or display the human condition so poignantly. I think this cd along with the book(when it comes out) will be a sure fire hit.

This has a lot of feeling. I got into the entire mood of the song. Love the guy's voice too.

Never too old for a magnificent debut

This album is a quirky, highly appealing delight. Cleverly looking at life from the perspective of "Pushing 50," Jayne Allison tells it like it is, but with humor, honesty and a healthy dose of optimism. Those lyrics are placed in simple yet unusual and alluring musical settings with lovely melodies. Allison's voice's charm is its sweet directness, the feeling that she is singing just for you. If you are going to take a chance on one album by a new artist, Jayne Allison's A Lot Like Life is a great bet. And I love the fact that her son produced it!

Just listened to the music clips, reading the profile, perused the mock site cybersnoop.com (the interview of Jayne's father is very funny). I think this is excellent work! The songs are gutsy, clever, well performed (at least the 30 seconds of each); the idea for the book is very attractive and on target for the mid 50 cohort (I definitely will read it), and the backup materials (ie: cybersnoop mock site) are very solid. I happen to know Jayne, and think this project is an excellent execution of an excellent person. I'm so proud of you for doing this! Ira
