Album Notes

Saxophonist, vocalist Jay Patten brings a lifetime of musical experiences (studio saxophonist, graduate of Berklee College Of Music, Crystal Gayle's music director, vocalist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, composer and performer) to "Night Blue."Co-produced with his friend and drummer, Ric Lonow, Jay recorded eleven of his own songs and one classic saxophone standard (Earl Hagen's"Harlem Nocturne"). Ten tracks are instrumentals that range from the mysterious groove tune "Spider Dance", with Jay playing alto saxophone to the exotic, smooth jazz "Scorpio Moon" with Jay on soprano saxophone. Several tracks feature the talented Mike Loudermilk on guitar ("Bright Promise," "Love Spies," "Fire In The Kitchen," and the title track "Night Blue"). There are two vocal tracks with Jay stepping up to the microphone on "Love Comes Around' with special guest George Tidwell on muted trumpet and "If There Weren't Any Blues" with legendary blues man Jimmy Hall sitting in on harmonica.

"I leaned heavily on the instincts of the members of my band (Toni Sehulster on bass, Ric Lonow on drums, and Loudermilk on guitar) to keep the recording sessions fresh and spontaneous." There is a decidedly blue mood to this project that will sure to bring pure pleasure. The last track on the album, "Vortex Blue" was inspired by a trip to Sedona, Arizona a few years ago, "I lugged my horn to the top of a vortex mountain and played to valleys below at sundown. There was an eagle circling above." Jay's melodic, imaginative approach on alto, tenor and soprano saxophone dominates this creative CD. Check out "Night Blue."

This gifted Berklee grad gets his chance to "unwind" placing his diverse musical talents to work in his latest pleasing 50 minute cd. Jay Patten brings an extremely varied and intriguing musical background to his latest CD, NIGHT BLUE. You’ll hear all of this talent shine brightly right from your first listen. He took up guitar at eight growing up in Jersey as an Elvis fan, saxophone a few years later after hearing Stan Getz, and he was gigging in the New York area by the time he was thirteen. The family moved to Florida when he was in high school, and he ended up playing both guitar and sax for the hit-makers of the day, like The Shangri-las, Bobby Rydell, Joey Dee, and Del Shannon. Fast-forwarding past three years as vocalist with the Glenn Miller Band, a move to Nashville, and session-work with the likes of Johnny Cash and Pure Prairie League, Jay currently is Crystal Gayle’s music director, and performs regularly with his own band, which continues to be a staple in Nashville’s night scene, as well as on the concert stage. On NIGHT BLUE, Jay showcases his remarkable talent in a tour de force of captivating melodies and performances, focused primarily on his sax work along with a pair of savory vocals (his phrasing and style will remind you of Donald Fagen). Definitely check out the gently beautiful “For the Love,” his tasty treatment of the classic “Harlem Nocturne,” and the ethereal “Vortex Blue,” featuring Jay on alto sax, mandolin, and ethnic flute. Mr. “Blue” Jay Patten has scored big-time on this one. NIGHT BLUE is very cool indeed.
