Album Notes

ob‧scu‧ri‧ty  - [uh b-skyoo r-i-tee] –noun, plural -ties. 1. the state or quality of being obscure. 2. the condition of being unknown: He lived in obscurity for years before winning acclaim. 3. uncertainty of meaning or expression; ambiguity. 4. an unknown or unimportant person or thing. 5. darkness; dimness; indistinctness. [Origin: 1470–80; late ME < MF obscurite < L obscūritās, equiv. to obscūr(us) OBSCURE + -itās -ITY] ================ If you’ve ever seen the Dr. Seuss story about Horton hearing a ‘who’ then you’ll understand the value of letting your voice be heard. We may feel insignificant in the midst of this sea of music and talent. But it is individual uniqueness that makes the overall picture that much more interesting. Our only hope is that someone out there ambles our way and stops to take a look (or listen) only to be pleasantly surprised by what we have created. In fact, it may strike a chord with a number of people. Why put it in such a place as here? Well, if we have concocted something that we know others will enjoy it is only natural to want to share it. And this is a perfect forum for an artist who either cannot find their way into the “system” or who simply does not want to be chewed up in the “machine”. Why seek monetary gain? The answer to that may vary from person to person but, essentially in order to create an audible delicacy, one must go grocery shopping. And if one expects to be able to keep on creating new dishes without remuneration one will soon run out of funds. Hence, the intrinsic need of a price tag. (At least for this musical chef.) Most may be looking to grab the brass ring, seek fortune and fame, see their name up in lights and all those other clichés. But, by and large, the ultimate reason for the time we spend writing, performing, recording, editing and mastering is the enjoyment of the process. Anything beyond that is gravy. For those of you out there who seek neither fortune nor fame, this one’s for you. Bon appetit!

Exceptional!!

I listened to your CD on my way home from work last night and was very impressed. Big change from the dinosaur stuff! Very good arranging, songwriting and playing. I was blown away by how good your vocals sound. Jayway is a great songwriter!

Wow! nicely arranged Beatlesque tunes! Early Pink Floyd also comes to mind. His vocals remind one of Greg Allman or Warren Haynes of Govt Mule. The harmonies are spot on and the melodies offer surprising twists that grab you. Guitar and keyboard sounds are constantly original and changing. Favorite tune for me was Cola Brown Hair but all are so well put together. The cd starts and ends with 2 theocratic songs that many will love. The last song, Communicate is quite an anthem that can make the tears well up. Wow, indeed!

Toy Matinee's Patrick Leonard/Kevin Gilbert channeled!!

I would have to agree with Mr. Alt's assessment of Jason's music. I too heard the Toy Matinee influence, as well as a generous helping of slices of Beatles "fruits", to steal the artist's running metaphor re: this release. Nice arranging sensibility, too. Thanks to CD Baby for making music like this from relative "unknowns" available. Buy this very listenable and professionally performed and assembled cornucopia!

Another great one from Jason!!!

Arriving in my mail box today were a BUNCH of CDs, including Eric Clapton & JJ Cale, Cream, Robert Randolph, Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, Sam Moore, and this GREAT one from an artist who calls himself Jayway, but I know him better as Jason Arvanites. I listened to this one first, and was not disappointed. It's certainly the freshest music I've heard in a looong time. I hear Genesis, Toy Matinee, and of course the Beatles in these beautifully crafted tunes. And Jay is not shy about showing his sense of humor. My personal favorites - Dust Bunnies, Irukandji, and Communicate (VERY Beatlesque harmonies and arrangements on that last one). Buy this or you'll never be happy again!!!
