Album Notes

Jazz Caravan has been a regional favorite in the Baltimore metro area for over ten years. Voted “best” by Music Monthly, the City Paper, and the Baltimore Sun, the six-member Caravan offers a diverse repertoire of jazz standards from the 1920s-1960s, as well as original tunes with a vintage flair. The band's special blend of horns and vocals creates a classic sound with a distinctively energetic edge.

Atlay Washington fronts the band. Liz Sesler-Beckman plays keys, Dave Hughes bass, Eric Heavner trumpet, Dave Rybczynski sax, and Ron Tanner drums. Their collective experience is vast—from the Stan Kenton orchestra to the Berklee College of Music.

Jazz Caravan-No Boundries

BUY THIS CD NOW! This cd contains top notch performances in a few different styles of jazz. Most of the tunes contain vocals, which are wonderful. The female singer has a VERY strong and identifyable style of her own. SHe is very smooth and seductive and fits the grooves of this band perfectly. One of the highlights of this CD is a track that takes you back to the Dixieland era. Its amazing to hear a modern jazz group absolutly NAIL this style. You can tell these guys studied this style, but if you only heard this one track, you would think they play this style exclusivly. Its stellar. THe horn players are smokin and the musicians on this cd are well represented and featured promenently throughout. Every track swings and the soloists (mainly horn players-take note of Eric's trumpet improvs)consistently take the swing to a new level. As the review above mentions diversity, you get a LOT of diversity in this set of tunes and this is the kind of CD where you just let the whole thing play end to end. Very satisfying. You will also note the sound quality of this CD to be particularly superior. Great care has been taken to properly showcase each of the band members as well as the vocalist. Nothing honks me off like a singer that is too far in front of the band mix (like some of the Ella/Pass cds...Joe might as well have stayed home..AHGGG). None of that here..everyone has their own space in the mix. I would also like to make special mention of Dave Hughes on Bass. THough the band does play some traditional jazz in this set, the bass sound is very modern and unique. Dave is an extremely capable bassist and provides a very tight bottom end this band's sound. He is very electric and at times is able to intertwine his bass lines with the melodic instruments, which for me emphasizes that this is a BAND effort. Many CDs are recorded one track at a time and end up sounding like it. THis is a band that is very tight, very together and very interactive. Many of the new younger jazz groups lack this interaction on their cds when this is one of the most important features of jazz. Hats off to Jazz Caravan for one of the best contemporary (yet in keeping with the traditional) jazz releases I have heard in years. May I repeat myself...BUY THIS CD NOW!

Excellent CD - Atlay's voice is a wonderful complement to the music of tis ensemble. My husband wanted to know why she and the other artists were still working full time jobs, instead of performing on a full circuit!! I would have to agree with him !
