Album Notes

A beautiful 72-page book offers unforgettable images of the jazz masters by the great photographer Herman Leonard, who was always there when the action was going down. Two CDs overflowing with extraordinary music, complement the sensitivity and artistry of these photographs, forming an audio-visual gallery of some of the finest, most soulful jazz ever recorded by over 30 of its greatest practitioners. Intimate session stories about each performance enrich the listener's experience by detailing exactly what went down in the studio while these recordings were taking place.

* 72-page coffee table book featuring thirty-five full page Herman Leonard classic jazz photos not available anywhere else at this price.
* Each of the 31 tracks corresponds with an intimate session story within the book, exhaustively researched and written by famed archivist Ross Firestone.
* Lavish boxset package makes a perfect gift item.
* Leonard's photos are recognized throughout the world and have been featured in over 100 exhibitions. The Smithsonian Institution houses his entire collection in the permanent archives of musical history.
* Produced by Alan Douglas (Jimi Hendrix, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans).
* Package design by groundbreaking artist Frank Gauna.

"If I were to suggest a present for a jazz fan who has everything or for someone who wants to know jazz from the inside out, my very first choice would be Jazz Memories." -Nat Hentoff

"After reading, listening and viewing Jazz Memories, I am convinced it is the best compilation of the masters of the Golden Age of jazz ever produced! Herman Leonard's photographs are as spontaneous and vibrant as the jazz solos performed by the great collection of artists included in this brilliant package - it is an instant classic." -Tony Bennett

"Leonard's photographs, replete with twisting cigarette smoke, dramatic backlighting and total reverence for the artist cannot be beat." -Downbeat

The selection of music is very well done. The photographs and comments are excellent. Only one problem I am returning the first CD because the last 2 tracks on it are damaged. dvoltmer@yahoo.com

A fine selection of music and artists in a wonderful package.

The two disk "Jazz Memories" collection of 31 cuts is a very well thought out jazz CD that presents the listener with a very good mixture of jazz from the 40s, 50s and 60s. The music ranges from dixieland (Louis Armstrong)to bebop (Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell and Fats Navarro)to mainstream (Roy Elridge, Count Basie, Ben Webster, Benny Carter, Lester Young, Milt Jackson, Erroll Garner, Coleman Hawkins and Duke Ellington) to vocals (Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald) to everything in between (Clifford Brown and Max Roach, Stan Getz, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey, Art Tatum, Lucky Thompson, Gerry Mulligan, Cannonball Adderley, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lennie Tristano and Lee Konitz.) It comes with a very well-done 70 page book containing beautiful full page photos by Herman Leonard and some great short stories of the artists. This is a very good introduction to the golden years of jazz, centering on the 50s. I rate the 2 CD set 4.5 stars. Don Voltmer - KAJX (Aspen CO NPR FM radio)Jazztime with Don show.
