Album Notes

Searching for great ensemble vocal jazz recordings is quite a challenge, and much of the best music in the genre is recorded by collegiate groups such as the Down Beat award winning Sacramento State University Jazz Singers and C-Sus, both directed by Kerry Marsh. "In the Winelight", the latest CD from these groups, is an aggressive statement in ensemble vocal jazz, attempting to expand the boundaries by incorporating influences of not only the traditions of vocal jazz, but also contemporary instrumental jazz, funk, fusion, and pop.

The CD contains songs originally performed by saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Michael Brecker, jazz vocalists Dianne Reeves, Kurt Elling, and Lizz Wright, folk/pop artist Jonatha Brooke, as well as a couple standards an original composition by Kerry Marsh. The sound of the CD is lush and beautiful, with interesting and biting harmonies that both challenge and excite the ears. This CD earned both of the groups national awards for excellence from Down Beat magazine in 2005, one of the highest honors in jazz education. "In the Winelight" is well produced, as well, getting the most from the talented vocalists at Sacramento State.

Jazz With Attitude

Great album from a bunch of very able and talented singers. Shades of Manhattan Transfer but with much more of a modern edge. Highlights: "In the Winelight" (the Grover Washington Jnr classic set with a vocal refrain) - simply brilliant. Check out the Gospel-Jazz flavours of "Walk With Me, Lord" - simply heavenly! Other, noteables are "Sing a Song of Song" and "That Old Black Magic".

Best Is Yet To Come...

The best is yet to come for Sacramento State's music department once again. The work each vocalist puts into their vocals and how they listen to the director, Kerry Marsh, is a fine example of a disciplined and prominent VJ group. Don't be surprised if they polish up another prestigious Downbeat award anytime soon, delightful and fun-filled music...

Fresh, groundbreaking

I've been a fan of vocal jazz groups for a long time (Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, Real Group), and I've never run across anything like this CD. This is the real deal, and from a COLLEGE group!? It's very professionally recorded and sung, and the music selection is interesting and bold. Good to see there's something new on the horizon with this kind of music. Buy this CD!
