notes
Josh Calhoun has been selected as one of 32 finalists, among 600 applicants to the Kerrville New Folk songwriting contest for 2000. Kerrville is a folk festival located in Texas, well known for attracting emerging songwriters and seasoned veterans to the Quiet Valley Ranch for a three-week festival celebrating the gift of creativity in music.
Josh Calhoun is a performing songwriter from Wisconsin who writes music that speaks to people by pulling them in with meaningful lyrics and soulful melodies. Some reoccurring themes underlying his music include, hope, the family, childhood storytelling, the spiritual, and a look at the simple in a new way. "I want to tell a story with my music and present a positive upbeat vibe through my songs." Josh pulls from many musical genres, which have provided good soil for his songs. He comes from a strong folk music background from a lyrical perspective; however there is an emphasis on the "groove" of a tune from a rhythm point of view as well. His guitar playing is a diverse combination of fingerpicking ballads to swinging flat picking, and switching gears to alternate tuning with a funky rhythm. A phrase that comes to mind when explaining Josh's music would be "variety is the spice of life."
Josh was born in San Diego, California but spent the majority of his youth in Wisconsin. He remembers growing up listening to folk music and attending concerts at a very early age. Greg Brown, Nancy Griffith, L.J. Booth, Bobby McFerrin, Corkey Siegel, and B.B. King were among some of the family favorites discovered in his mother's vast vinyl collection. He comes from a very musical family and recognizes his Mother for introducing him to the guitar at age 13.
Josh enjoys performing at concert series, outdoor festivals, clubs and coffeehouses around Wisconsin as a solo act or with his Trio. Josh is a performer and writer who has a good grasp on the art of songcrafting and the presentation of those songs in an engaging way to audiences.

Mr.Calhoun is definately one of the best artists I have ever came into contact with...Besides me. I was always in trouble in his class for talking too much or not doing my sketchbook. I still think that I can draw better cars than him and maybee play gutair better on the song Steam Engine Breath... But other than that Mr.Calhoun is very nice... He has a LOT more patience with me than Mr.Bergstressor does, And I see why! I really look forward to seeing you this school year though...Your Biggest fan Sacco:(

author: Jumy you beloved stuffed pet squirellWell theres not much i can say to you considreing you left me in the dark closet over summer vacation. Im a little disappointed that i couldnt go up to the cabin with you and see grandma because last year the "white caps were to high." Maybe this year if its still the same case we could go "climb on" a tree. Then for the evening plans we could go to a Norah Joans concert (I made t-shits, tie-dyed i must add) and just in case its sold out we can go see a bellybutton singer becaue "bellybutton singen is a real big DDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLLLLLLLL" hope to visit you next year. *your class mascot Jumy*
An Interesting Piiece of art with music from all aspects
author: Derek MathersJosh Calhoun is an artist. A musician. A teacher, and spiritual inspiration guide in one. This disk reveals his innermost talents and how he goes about doing them. If you have some extra money, it would do you well to spend it on this exclusive CD. Its music is creative, using different string instruments to fully express the meaning of folk music. I entirely encourage anyone of any age to purchase this one of a kind album.

I always play it!
author: Scott SchumacherI saw Josh play live briefly at the Madison Folk Fest in 2003, and bought this CD right away! Tool Shed is always in rotation with any of my playlists in iTunes now. The emotional tone of the album is one of feeling comforted by the legacy that others in your family, your community, and you yourself leave behind. A storytelling CD that trasports you to small towns, cabin-life, and the positive comforts one feels when they "come home" to their rural roots. When's the next CD release!!??
i love it.
author: Ashlee Roddyi love it now and i loved it when you came to my house to sleep over in texas!!! i really enjoy the CD and i love you and tom (uncle). i wish you could come to the fest. again and you guys could stay with me and the family. We listen to the CD every day!! LOVE YOU.
Way to go Josh!
author: LynOf course, I'm biased, but this is a fantastic cd and wonderful grouping of the beautiful music that Josh creates. His music can take you into another time, another place, then bring you happily back into reality...what a wonderful thing.
Beautiful melodies....wonderful voice....great mood
author: RosieThe Vinegrower is a masterful piece of work. Josh's melodies and beautiful voice bring out the characters and emotions in his stories (i.e. songs). The instrumentation is enough to augment, but not overtake, the lyrics. We play it over and over.
Josh Calhoun is really good! I play Vinegrower all the time.
author: KassiaI was checking the local papers for something to do, when I saw "CD release party- Josh Calhoun(folk singer)." I figured "I like folk, why not?" I was surprised with what I heard. He's got a really good beat, and the songs have good lyrics. Just because he's from Oshkosh, don't be fooled. This is definately one of my favorite CD's & I wish he'd come out with another!!
