Retro, playful and personal this album lets you unwind on cushions of sound. This album is full of cool sound effects and great instrumental interludes. My favorite tracks are "Passing the Time" and "For Cecile."

The Bosco's Standards Remain Unshaken
author: Drummer Bear (Mike Fass)
This album is one of those rare pleasures for which one waits a great deal of time, so much so that one hopes not to be disappointed. "Being in the Energy Funnel" is well worth the wait.
Back in 2003 we were treated to an early single release from this newly finished and released collection of deliciously groovy compositions. That single was "They Danced" and I knew it was a sign of more good things to come. Finally, here it is and, after so much anticipation, it's almost impossible not to pit it critically against the Bosco's last masterpiece, "A Positive Flow", a record that I and others have hailed as one of the greatest pop albums ever made ("Child of the Sun" still raises the hair all over my body and not every performer can do that to me). That's one heck of a standard to live up to with any kind of follow up but, upon hearing this entire new offering, my hat's already in the air. How does it differ? Well, let's see.
I recall that the ONLY fault I could find with "A Positive Flow" was the use of synthetic drums (only because I prefer them live). A petty concern at that but it was all I had. On "Energy Funnel", the addition of live drums and new instruments and textures gives this album a decidedly earthier feel, although an unmistakably JC Bosco outing nonetheless, with all the playfully trippy quirks that have been a staple of their sound since the 1980s when we knew them as JF Bosco.
It is, in fact, a perfect companion piece to its predecessor and, dare I say it, even exceeds it in terms of production and presentation. Not only that but the songs are just damned fun! The vocal harmonies are as sumptuous and beautiful as we've come to expect and the musicianship is, as always, top notch.
Is it coming across yet that I love this album?
