Album Notes

Jim Cifelli has been active as a trumpeter, composer and jazz educator in New York City for the past 15 years. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous professional and student ensembles including the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, The Composers Big Band, Clarion University, New Jersey University, The Navy Commodores and others. The New York Nonet has to date released three CD's: Bullet Trane, So You Say and Tunnel Vision. Review briefs for So You Say: Highly recommended, Jim Cifelli's hard bop nonet session condenses big band charts for fewer performers while maintaining a big band sound and enthusiasm. Jim Santella:Allaboutjazz.com The Jim Cifelli New York Nonet has produced one of the most interesting contemporary jazz CD's so far this year with the emphasis on brass in So You Say. These 8 selections will hold your attention and take you on a magical musical mystery tour that you will want to repeat often! Some original compositions by Jim Cifelli coupled with Gerry Mulligan's "Night Lights" and Joe Henderson's "Recorda Me" make this a collection worth owning. So You Say is contemporary jazz at it's finest, and it is everything you need for some good blending of trumpet, flugelhorn and saxophone! Excellent! So You Say deserves it's five-star rating! A mix of very interesting charts with some intricate and demanding playing involved. It wears well with repeated listening which to my ears is mandatory. The musicianship is first class.

Ok, so the members of this band may not be the most well-known players, they are certainly very capable of excellent improvising, writing and arranging. A very solid album, with great tunes, and fabulous musicianship. Well worth a listen!
