John is a Bloomington, Indiana-based songwriter who released his debut album, Childhood Music, in 2005. Recorded at Farm Fresh Studios with his band, The Enthusiasts, the record is a fine example of the ragged blend of rock-and-roll, pop and folk music that he's been making since the late eighties. Dehner and his three-piece electric band have enlisted a few friends and local luminaries (from such diverse bands as Kwijibo, Lola, Rogue Wave, White Lightning Boys, and Lazy Susan) to record Childhood Music, and now they're eager to bring these hand-made songs to a wider audience.
Since the mid-1980's, John has played his songs in nightclubs and bars, basements and barns, garages and coffeehouses and festivals, from streetcorners in Barcelona to stages in Bloomington.
As a longtime presence at the periphery of Bloomington's original music scene, Dehner has carved out a sound that falls somewhere between slightly damaged folk music and fully remodeled garage rock. He's played with a wide variety of local talents over the years, many of whom appear on the new record, and he's taken the stage in support of visiting artists like Richard Buckner, Vic Chesnutt, Sheryl Crow, The Hangdogs, Jimbo Mathus, and Thee Shams.

Thanks John (and The Enthusiasts) for this excellent work. The songwriting is politically sharp and poetically understated with irony and wit; an intelligent indictment of our times yet still hopeful. Bloomington has always cultivated a vibrant, homegrown music scene, and Dehner has been a large part of that for nearly twenty years. This album makes me homesick.

The tunes paint pictures. General Sanchez resonated with me like no tune I have heard in the post Iraq occupation reality. The Midwestern outlook on the Bush descent into fascism eased my pain.
Is there any other album that refers to Eugene Hasenfus?
Each listen reveals new layers - great melodies and voice.
