\"Jean Spencer writes the best songs this town has ever heard; they\'re honest, catchy, and unforgettable.\"
\"Jean\'s voice is incredibly clear and strong...a riveting performance.\"
--Flagpole Magazine, Athens, GA
Jean Spencer is a well respected Athens songwriter who
started out with the Athens rock band 28 Days. Her sound has evolved into a more acoustic, vocally oriented one, but the songs remain strong, sincere, and well crafted. In 2001, Jean was a finalist in two songwriting competitions sponsored by the Georgia Music Industry Association.
She has appeared on \"It\'s Friday,\" \"Georgia Gazette,\" and \"Songsmiths,\" an NPR series that also features such Georgia musicians Patterson Hood, Randall Bramlett, Nathan Shepard, Vic Chesnutt, and the Indigo Girls. Jean was also a founding member of Bluewing, a short lived but well loved Athens female vocal trio.
Old Magnolia is Jean\'s second cd (Where the Pavement Ends was the first), featuring William Tonks\' great dobro work and a love of vocal leads and harmonies. Recorded at the legendary John Keane Studio in Athens, GA, this cd includes Jean\'s latest songs, a couple of older favorites from the era of tapes (God Damn True Love, Winona), and the perfect cover for this collection, a live version of Ron Sexsmith\'s God Loves Everyone.

Masterful!

I have been a fan of Jean Spencer's since 28 Daze days, and she just keeps getting better! This CD is a real work of art. The stirring harmonies and haunting melodies invite you in from the get-go, and the stellar lyrics keep you there. Only 14 tracks later, it spits you out the back door before you are ready to leave, and you find yourself cutting through yards to get on the front porch again. Foreign Girl and Old Magnolia are reason enough to buy this CD, but there are so many more - new versions of old favorites like Winona, foot stompers like Kingdom Hall and - my favorite - Change Your Mind. This song had me poring the liner notes, and the BMI database, in disbelief that it was an original, as it feels like it could have been a Kitty Wells song that I grew up on. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the production values on this record as well. John Keane is as good as it gets, and he put as much effort into this record as into any REM or Panic CD. The players and singers are without equal as well. Overall, it is a joy to listen to this record over and over. Stuff this one into the stocking of someone you love!
