Album Notes

With his debut record, "outside," released independently in 2004, Jon-Erik Borgen emerges as a refreshingly creative soul among today's male singer, songwriters. The album's ten original works showcase Borgen's eclectic alternative folk-rock sound that is inspired by the music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Beatles, Bob Marley, 10,000 Maniacs, Mark Knopfler, and Dave Matthews. J.E.'s songwriting eloquently draws upon his life experiences with honesty, introspection, and emotion. Through reflective lyrics and contagious melodies, "outside" truly draws widespread appeal. The music is a fresh taste of folk-groove with influences of jazz and reggae rhythms.

Born and raised in Denver, Borgen was first drawn to the musical light at age five when his mother took him to see John Denver at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Since picking up the guitar at 14, songwriting and performing have been a steady passion. Graduating from high school in Denver, Borgen headed east to Middlebury College in Vermont where he played in an acoustic jug band and honed his skills as a songwriter and performer. After school, he moved to Colorado Springs to work in the nonprofit sector at El Pomar Foundation. During that time, Borgen used his spare time to write and perform at area venues like the Ancient Mariner, Wooglin's, Acoustic Coffee Bar, and La Baguette. In the winter of 2001, after going out on the road as a guitar tech with his friends Dispatch, Borgen was inspired to pursue his passion for music on a greater level.

Recently, Borgen completed his studies at Berklee College of Music. Living in Boston, J.E. has honed his live act over the last year while piecing together a talented group of musicians to form a band that is quickly developing a steady grassroots following in the New England area and beyond. With musical roots based in folk rock, J.E. brings the influences of jazz and reggae to create a unique and uplifting groove. Supported by a stellar rhythm section of Erik Privert (Berklee Grad - '01) and Dave Brophy on drums ( Manhattan School of Music - '03), the duo's dynamic mix accentuates the poignant and penetrating vocal and guitar styles of J.E.

In addition to touring throughout the Boston area, J.E. Borgen and his band showcased the Best Buy Stage (July 3rd) at the Navy Pier in Chicago. In June, he was in his home state of Colorado to promote his CD release for 250 people at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver and another 100 at the D-Note in Arvada. Over the past few months, J.E. Borgen's played to enthusiastic crowds at several schools, bars, and clubs in the Northeast.

Johnny Likey

Listening to this CD was like going to a movie that you know nothing about. Two options... 1) You walk out in the middle of the flick. 2) You cash-in on your free popcorn refill and buy another ticket. I chose option 2 and can't stop listening to the damned CD... I'm a big fan of "Passing Time" and "Pointing to You". Great tunes for a long road trip or a long night at the office. JEBorgen... come to NYC!

Great folk inspired tunes
author: Brewster
This is an especially impressive CD for a debut album. Jon's lyrics relate a depth and creativity of a veteran musician with some funky sounds to keep it fun. Surely a rising singer/songwriter talent.

This disc ROCKS
author: Isaac Dunham
This CD is awesome. What I like best is that you can listen to the whole thing in one sitting and get the best of so many different worlds. Song 3, Outside, is a great rock/pop/folk song that represents the whole album. Song 4, Midnight Sun, rocks out so much that you'll have to hit the air drums while you listen (or maybe its just me). Other songs are reflective enough to let you listen to the lyrics (which are smart and poignant - unlike so many other albums out there). I also love the piano which adds a great sound and reminds me alot of Coldplay. Overall, a great cd, I recommend it to anyone looking for some good new music.

A debut album not to miss!
author: Happy Listener
Outside shows the depth and diversity of this up-and-coming artist's talents. From classical guitar to steel drums, each song brings in a flare that makes it memorable and unique. Everyone who I've shared these tunes with has bought the CD for him or herself because of its widespread appeal. I couldn't be more impressed with a debut album and can't wait for live performances throughout the coming year!
