CROSS OVER THE RIVER

This is a Confederate collection from the American Civil War period; Confederate History in Song. This is the second in a series of Civil War albums from Jed Marum. The songs are mainly original from the personal stories of Southern history, but some favorites of the era are included as well, including some unusual and here-to-for unknown lyrics from the period. The instruments are all acoustic-style; guitars, banjo, banjola, mandolin, upright bass, fiddle and button accordion.

Jed's first collection of Civil War songs is called FIGHTING TIGERS OF IRLEAND and is also available on CDBaby. FIGHTING TIGERS has songs from Union, Confederate and African American stories; American Civil War History in song.

"Marum gives us history in song and music that is every bit as powerful and awe-inspiring as the television series Civil War. He has a wonderful facility for taking these stories of the ordinary people and the big events and making them real. His use of personal papers and poetry from the period is exceptional. He never forgets his Irish roots or the often underestimated contribution of the Irish to that conflict."

"The album opens with ‘Monaghan’s Lament’ about an Irish born colonel from New Orleans. Most of us only know William Quantrill from the film about his raiders. On the track ‘One Bloody Friday’ we hear a fictional view of the Lawrence Massacre as he might have delivered it. Marum uses the traditional music of the period to great effect by adding extra verses to elucidate the story. This is particularly effective ‘Shenandoah’. He gives us a spirited rendition of ‘Cindy’ a song of the period that is rather poignant as we remember that in the midst of war such popular ditties were composed and sung and people tried to live ordinary lives. He includes a new song in a similar vein ‘Come Back Katy’ to reinforce this message of the non-fighting periods of the war. Getting back to the war he uses the dying words of Stonewall Jackson as the chorus on a wonderful track, ‘Cross Over the River’. You can almost taste the powder in the air and see the tranquil scene after a battle with still water and mist. In the best tradition of folk music he sets his lyrics to familiar tunes for great effect on Buckland Races’. The tune used is ‘Tramp, Tramp, Tramp’ but Irish listeners will recognise another song. Marum includes one of the great songs of that or any period as his penultimate track. Foster’s ‘Hard Times’ must be one of the most recorded songs of all time but I never tire of hearing it. For me the best track on offer here is ‘After the Dance’. Here he paints a wonderful picture of the hall after the dancers leave and fiddle strings cease to vibrate and reminds us that life goes on."

Jed Marum's list of albums on Boston Road Records play regularly on Folk/Bluegrass and Celtic radio programs around the world. They are distributed widely on all the major MP3 services. Jed brings his music to festival, club and concert venues throughout the US with over 150 shows each year. His 2007 touring plans include festival and concert dates in Canada and Mexico.

Jed's musical style is American Celtic with strong Bluegrass roots. His many original songs focus on the stories of family and immigrant ancestors.     Where has Jed being hiding all along? The way he sings and his lyrics just grab your attention. This album is rarely out of my CD player, be in the car or at home. The songs on the album will stand the test of time and can't wait to play it around the campfire at our next encampment, all the guys-blue and gray will love this. The song "Stonewall of the West" is particularly favourite as I live and breath Major-General Cleburne.We share a county and I am a frequent visitor to his birthplace, here in Co. Cork.

    Two of the tracks from CROSS OVER THE RIVER have been licensed for use in a Lone Chimney Films movie called BLOODY DAWN - made for the PBS and History Channel markets. I got to see the teaser for the movie that is set to the track One Bloody Friday. The music is moving enough on its own - add the visual and it could get to Bloody Bill Anderson himself.

    I loved this CD from the moment I put it in my CD player. Jed's songs have a way of grabbing you and not letting go, resurfacing in your head days later. Although it's titled "A Confederade Collection," the stories told have a universal and timeless quality to them. I'm a died-in-the-wool, true-blue yankee with ancestors who fought in the Maine regiments and I recommend this CD to everyone I know.

    I love the John Brown satire set to the melody of John Brown's March. What a hilarious look at John Brown from a “tongue in cheek” Confederate south! Then One Bloody Friday, the story of William Quantrill and the Lawrence Massacre, told just the way it was. What a great song! And I’ve always been fascinated by the all but forgotten story of the CSS Shenandoah which Jed retells in The Shenandoah's Run and then the Indian Territory Confederate lyrics in Shenendoah – where did these come from? These are all such great stories, and more. But if I had to pick my favorite, I’d have to pick, Stonewall of the West about my all-time hero, Patrick Cleburn. The Stephen Foster song, Hard Times Come Again No More may be a close second. I have a feeling my favorites will change though, over time. This is CD is a true treasure!

    I predict this CD will have strong appeal with Civil War aficionados, reenactors, performers, and anyone who loves good ballads. Just reading the CD's insert and the background of the songs is an education and it reveals the extent of Marum's research. CROSS OVER THE RIVER has a large targeted audience and has all the potential for becoming a cult classic. The CD is a reminder that there are many stories buried in history we have not yet heard, and there are emotions connected to that war that we haven't yet considered. As a writer, Marum is not only skilled—he is honest. He knows that one's culture and heritage can be lost, and he is determined to give life to long-silent voices. When those of the past fade from our memory and art, then they are truly dead to us. As long as there are writers like Marum who aren't afraid to tell the stories, the dead will live on and our heritage will not be lost.

    Jed Marum, in addition to being a great instrumentalist and vocalist, is such a talented songwriter I often ask myself whether the piece I am listening to is a traditional ballad from the 19th century, or an original composition. Cross Over The River is a collection of Confederate-leaning Civil War songs that would have stirred the soul of any southern patriot in 1860. From haunting ballad to inspiring melodies of struggle, this album is a must for any civil war reenactor who loves to sit around the campfire with acoustic music and period songs filling the night air.

    "Treasure chests with hidden treasures" I call my Jed Marum CDs. There are the obvious treasures; the wonderful singing, the skillful handling of instruments, the ear-catching, toe-tapping melodies and lyrics which make you either reflect or want to sing along - or both. And then there's the hidden treasure, the little "extras" that you only discover little by little when listening through time and again. To me, a Jed Marum CD is like a voyage of discovery, one that I make step by step, enjoying every moment of the journey undertaken in his company. I've only had this CD for a few days, but I loved it from the word "go", and I love it better with each listen through. There are some awesome new songs on this CD, songs like "Monaghan's Lament" and "Come Back Katy" stand out for me, but every track on this CD is an addition to my Marum Treasure Chest ;-)

    Jed sure knows what he's singing about! The songs on this cd will stand the test of time just like songs such as "Dixie" have. If Jed had been alive during the Civil War I'm sure the soldiers (rebs and yanks both) would be singing his songs around the campfire!!
