Well-balanced pieces and artistic group

I love this CD! Each pieces has each expression, impression, approach.
I really like "shinonome no uta". His composition is like honkyoku, but sometimes he use modern harmony, it's very effective and cool. Well-balanced piece!
"Through the Leaves" is so unique. I think it's challenging piece for shakuhachi and koto. Because of the chord progression and modulation. I enjoyed it.
"Reflection" is beautiful! I like it. I can learn many thing from his composition.
I was impressed by koto's expression. Koto's sound changes the world.... What a amazing instrument!
"Kai" is dramatic. She made story. Good concept! Thank you for good music!

great blend of old and new

This CD has a wonderful range of music: a koto solo, a shakuhachi solo, koto/shakuhachi duets; classics and contemporary pieces. Koto accompaniment includes 17-string bass koto in addition to the conventional 13-string koto. The chief attraction of the CD is of course the sound and technique of shakuhachi master Jeff Cairns, who employs the full range of shakuhachi techniques to bring out the full range of the compositions. For me, the highlight of the CD was the first track, Shinonome no Uta. Starting with an extended and haunting shakuhachi solo, and leading in to a similarly haunting koto solo, it builds naturally into a rousing duet before returning to the original mood. Highly recommended.
