Album Notes

Jeff Murray
Standpipe
(Fearless Folk Records)

"Jeff's music is unpretentious and unblemished." -Musician's Trade Journal

Hailing from the cutting-edge neo-folk scene of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Jeff Murray began playing guitar at age 10. In 2001, Jeff began busking for rent money and recorded his second album, Grimace, which received radio play on WERS, WMWM, WXRV, WUMB, and was featured on National Public Radio's Hear And Now.

Weaving delicate guitar playing with introspective lyrics and honest wit, Standpipe features Jeff Murray's off-kilter perspective on relationships and life. Backed by rhythmic organ and drums on songs like "That I Can" and "Wire," Jeff's earthy vocals plead the cause of someone doing his best even as he's left twisting in the wind by an ex-lover, robbed of dignity and grace.

On Standpipe, Jeff Murray also shows versatility as an instrumentalist, laying down tasteful licks on dobro, lapsteel, mandolin, and harmonica that may remind listeners of John Fahey. Tracks like "Short Stepping" are particularly telling of Murray's talents as a creative, subtle picker.

Above all else, Standpipe is testimony to a songwriter who's able to open up himself and express feelings of love, betrayal, confusion, loss and joy with a vision that's at once personal and universal, and always inspired.
