Album Notes

Dead Heat smokes with the thickest grooves of the 21st century. This release blends the rhythms of jazz, funk, rock, salsa, reggae & swing. Of the ten selections, five are original compositions.

Dead Heat is the realization of a musical concept by Bil Jenko: musician, songwriter, producer, arranger, engineer & studio owner. He has been making music for many years (his first paid gig was in the seventh grade) on the road & in the studio playing jazz, swing, rock, blues, pop & bluegrass.

Bil has produced & engineered many albums covering a wide variety of musical styles under his Whynot Music label. He has performed with & recorded artists including The Brubeck-LaVerne Trio, The Ed Shaughnessy Quintet, Peter Tork, James Lee Stanley, The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, The Hot Club Quartet, Sarah Siskind, NPR, Chris Murrell, Claude Frank, The Vienna String Quartet, Craig Smith, Wood & Steel, JJ Blue & the Tokyo String Quartet along with many others. Gathered together with Bil for this project are some of the finest musicians in North Carolina.

The artists appearing on Dead Heat are:
Bil Jenko - all keyboards & percussion
Larry Carman - drums
Steve Blake - sax
Gino Grandinetti - guitar
Alan Neese - trumpet
Jack King - guitar
Ken Wilmot - trumpet
Dave Reid - clarinet
Greg Hyslop - guitar
Mike Wesolowski - harmonica
Roberto Orihuela - percussion
Alan Nemeth - vibes & drums
Steve Ware - bass
Jeff Weichinger - bass
Chris Hill - bass

Bil currently performs with the jazz quartet The UpperlineUp. Their debut release "Strike" is on cd at cdbaby.com & download at your favorite site. Other members of The UpperlineUp also appear on Dead Heat. Most recently, Bil was a member of the jump-swing blues quintet Blues-A-Matic.

From Bil: This album celebrates many types of music. My intent is to remove boundaries & combine styles in order to create new sounds & textures. I also consider the studio itself to be a musical instrument, & studio pioneers such as George Martin & Jimi Hendrix are a great influence. Thanks for listening!

Loved it!

Mellow yet upbeat. Easy to listen to but won't put you to sleep. Nice mix of tunes, but not too jarring. Can't judge a book by its cover - the bland album cover doesn't hint at the full round energetic bubbling sounds inside. Loved it!! Thanks!!
