notes

NY born and bred, Jenn Friedman sat at her parents' piano with a melody she just couldn't get out of her head. Picking the notes out one by one, and unaware that she was opening the door to her lifelong passion, Jenn wrote her first song.

For twenty years, this journey took her through the sounds of Peter, Paul and Mary, Carly Simon, Pete Seeger, swirling around the harmonies of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, and eventually hovering over Ani DiFranco, Jewel, Tori Amos, etc.

A graduate of SUNY Purchase, Jenn spent her four years of college in "music lockdown," intensely writing, recording, and exploring the murky depths of the wild and crazy music industry, coming up for air while performing at such legendary venues as CBGB's, The Knitting Factory, The Sidewalk Café and more.

Jenn is a true singer/songwriter—her songs are versatile in their musical style and their lyrical content, all the while having the common threads of her incredible piano skill and intense vocals, coaxing the listener on a magical journey through haunted houses, loooong car rides on open roads, unrequited love, and the occasional ditty about finding God at the circus!

Currently making her home in New York City, Jenn's new album drops in September of 2007 and she hits the road soon thereafter.

So keep your eyes and ears open, boys and girls, because Jenn Friedman's songs WILL change your life…forever!

  • Beautiful and dreamy!
    author: Ben Perkins

The first words that comes to my mind when listening to Jenn's music is "dream-like", the arrangements and melodies are elegant and her voice is hauntingly beautiful. I think the choice of album title is perfect because this is an album I want to listen to on a beautiful summers day while sitting in the shade. You can hear the Tori influence throughout the album but she manages to retain her own voice not not yet her influences take control. And the lyrics? Well I wish I could write as well as Jenn! If these are her lyrics now, it boggles the mind how perfect her writing will be in the future! I would say my favourite song is “Captain”, a wonderfully dreamy song which just makes me smile! All in all I think “Wake Up Summer” is a fantastic début from an amazing artist who I am excited about, I just cannot wait to hear her future work.

Wake Up Summer is enchanting, beautiful, music that leaves you breathless, wanting more of Jenn's breathy, one-of-a-kind, poetic lyrics and style that just seem to take its listeners to a whole new dimension in music. The lyrics have a fresh, almost childlike dance to them as they leap at you from all sides and wrap around you, pulling you into the rhythmn that is hers alone. I'd recommend this album to anyone who is looking for fresh, poetic, lyrical music that will leave them wanting more!

Jenn Friedman's extraordinary talent is authentic and inspirational to those of all ages. Her lyrics are as carefully written as they are released; her songs hit home the way no other artist could deliver. I recommend Ms. Friedman's album to anyone who fears change but wishes to transform.

    author: Sethu Nair

Jenn Friedman's music has the power to evoke emotions. Her depth of her lyrics, her beautiful music and her haunting voice flow together as beautifully as the meeting of rivers; all becoming one as if they were separate never before. Wake Up Summer is a superb debut with great promise.

  • Great Debut
    author: Daniel O'Meara

Ms. Friedman has created an album that would be exceptional even if she weren’t still in college. That she is, is incredibly impressive. There is maturity in her music and a promise of greatness to come. She lists influences on her website as being Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, the Indigo Girls, Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, Ben Folds, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Dar Williams, Rufus Wainright, and Jewel among others. Any fans of these artists would certainly be happy to add this recording to their collection.
