Album Notes

"Colorado Springs-by-way-of-Detroit singer/songwriter Jeremy Facknitz refers to his second album, What a Day!, as "the nightmare to end all nightmares." While this 2006 release represents his "spare no expense" album, the one that was supposed to launch his commercial career, it didn't kick things off for him as he'd hoped. In fact, the stress and expense nearly had the opposite result.

Facknitz is certainly an excellent singer-songwriter, and this record is a showcase for that. The songs are acoustic, folkish-pop in a vein that first draws to mind acts like the Barenaked Ladies, minus the overwhelming irritation that band induces. Emotional without being weepy, What a Day! does not sound like an effort from some lo-fi, coffee shop troubadour, and maybe that's why Facknitz speaks less than lovingly about it.

This recording is a full band effort since Facknitz—a solo artist—tours as a "one-man band" of guitar, keys and trumpet. It will be interesting to see how these songs translate in a live environment. Bottom line is, they're well-crafted pop songs, and if his live show maintains the same level of quality as this release does, he should be well worth checking out."

Solid Work from a Talented Individual

From start to finish, Jeremy Facknitz' "What a Day" chronicles the introspective disillusionment we all face while getting older. Many artists attempt this, but few are so brave as to approach it with such methodical hooks, clever wordplay, amusing self-awareness, and unabashed feeling. Jeremy has not only a wonderful sense of flow and produtcion, but a knack for pulling you into his his world. With a voice that crosses a male Norah Jones with Sufjan Stevens, Jeremy paints portraits that are simultaneoulsy hilarious and heartbreaking, devastating and yet unanimous. Nicely done.

Already a Jeremy fan, I was blown away by the diversity of this cd. From the super catchy Riann and Overnight Concierge to the hauntingly deep lyrics of Give and Not Home, Jeremy proves he is not only an amazing writer and musician but also a brilliant singer with great range - just check out the falsetto on Sweet Wedding Bells. Not one to tow the line, his sound is unique and this cd is not like any other out there right now - definitely worth a listen.
