8-time Grammy winner and co-producer Tom Pick wrote, “While Gospel Music takes on different forms, I doubt that any would disagree that Elvis Presley’s style easily fits into the Southern Gospel mode. It takes about two syllables to determine that Elvis had a great influence on the vocal stylings of Jerry Deewood. If you like Elvis you're going to love Jerry Deewood.”
Co-producer Harrison Tyner wrote, “Prior to crossing over into eternity, Sherrill shared with me his deep appreciation of Jerry Deewood and I know for a fact that he enjoyed performing with him and singing with him at Sun Recording Studio in Memphis making this CD. Sherrill often spoke of Jerry’s singing as more of a natural sound than an imitation of Elvis.”
This CD is especially interesting because all of the songs except one are penned by noted Imperial tenor and former Elvis backup singer Sherrill Nielsen. Sherrill also sings on most of the songs with Jerry. Adding even more to the atmosphere of this recording, it was recorded at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, TN, where Elvis did many of his early recordings.
Jerry Deewood was performing nearby when he first met Sherrill following their performance of “The Boy From Tupelo.” It was December 11 and 12, 2004 – Sherrill (with his wife, Brenda) was on a two day tour of Belgium, Europe. Jerry’s shows came so close to Sherrill’s in location that they decided to combine forces in what became a unique musical experiment. In fact, their decision to join forces was based upon a mutual respect for each others accomplishments. For years, the world has known of the unique tenor voice of Sherrill Nielsen, his close connection with Elvis and several Hall of Fame nominations. Jerry is known throughout Belgium and Europe as an accomplished singer, having made the charts some 58 times; four times number one. He is often invited to appear on Belgium TV shows and his composed songs have been nominated by the Belgian Artistic Promotion to represent Belgium at the world famous MIDEM Festival in Cannes, France. Jerry is one of the pioneers of Rock ‘n’ Roll in his home town of Bruges, where he proved that a Brugean can also have the dark vocal timbre and the moves it takes to shake and sing like the best.
“I knew Sherrill Nielsen as a brother in arms, for the good music from rock to blues to gospel and for the good cause. My dear friend passed away in 2010. And I keep asking myself over and over again: Sherrill why did you have to leave us so soon? I know for sure that I’m gonna miss you for the rest of my days. May the music we made together and the songs we sang together be your legacy for all those who understand.” Your devoted friend, Jerry Deewood, Bruges BELGIUM EUROPE.
In March of 2010, The Southern Gospel News reported “Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame recipient, Sherrill Nielsen, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Sherrill and Brenda were performing in Europe when they found a blood clot in his leg. They flew home to Alabama, where he developed pneumonia.” Sherrill passed away in Cullman, AL, at 11:06 am on Friday, December 10, 2010. He was a Living Legend Award recipient; original tenor with the Imperials and his tenure in Southern Gospel music included groups such as Masters V, Hovie Lister & the Statesmen, Speer Family, Songfellows and the Plainsmen. Felton Jarvis wrote that Sherrill was Elvis’ favorite singer. His association with Elvis was legendary. Perhaps Elvis said it best, when on the back of Sherrill’s first paycheck he wrote, “God loves you, but He loves you best when you sing.” Sherrill was in the ministry for over 50 years. Please remember Brenda in your prayers.
