"Who have already been to concerts of the jazz vocalist Julia Feldman was probably craving (with his ears) for the release of (her) new fabulous cd "Words Are Worlds- A Tribute To Billie Holiday". In addition to her distinguished vocal skills, Julia Feldman combines in her singing special interpretations of Billie Holiday`s texts. The songs of "Lady Day" has already gained dozens of interpretations, therefore one has to be original to give a new angle to her music. Feldman, together with Yitzhak Yedid on the piano and Ora Boasson-Horev on the contrabass, fulfill this mission with success." (ASHER KESHER, music critic)

In her singing the Israel-based vocalist Julia Feldman combines elements of multiple styles, such as a variety of jazz genres, modern classical music, blues and free improvisation, while her delivery of lyrics is full of emotion and exploration. Julia has frequently worked with leading jazz artists and music groups. Among the artists she`s worked and sang with are Arnie Lawrence, Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, Bob Meyer, Boris Gammer, Eilon Tourgeman, Eli Magen (with a voice-double bass duo project), Jerry Garval, Jean Claude Johns, Judy Lewis, Stephen Horenstein, Steve Peskoff, Yitzhak Yedid and others. She has performed in leading Israeli jazz clubs and on various festivals (including Shuni Jazz Festival, Tel Aviv International Jazz Festival and at the Jerusalem Theater on the Israel Festival) and performs regularly with several groups; among others she leads a trio Ensemble, a Jazz Quartet (featuring Steve Peskoff on the guitar) and participates in "Musica Ficta" (performing unique original compositions by Ehud Horev). In 2008 Julia was a semi-finalist on the prestigious Shure Jazz Vocal Competition in Montreux, Switzerland, being one of 13 professional vocalists chosen from over 70 countries.

“Words Are Worlds (A Tribute to Billie Holiday)” is her debut album and it was released on a leading Israeli label Hed Arzi. The album is inspired by the work and personality of Billie Holiday and features unique arrangements of the known jazz standards that were performed by Holiday, alongside with the members` original compositions, all of which are connected by a leitmotif borrowed from Holiday`s profound ballad "God Bless the Child". The cd is a product of the Ensemble`s numerous successful performances with the material on many Israeli stages and was recorded, mixed and mastered by Udi Koomran, one of the leading Israel`s sound artists.

A fresh and open-minded perspective to the Holiday legacy

Words Are Worlds, the debut release by Israeli vocalist Julia Feldman, is an inspired tribute to the work and personality of Billie Holiday. Feldman, augmented by pianist, composer and arranger Yitzhak Yedid and bassist Ora Boasson-Horev, interprets songs identified with Holiday, focusing on the lyrics, thus enabling herself and her trio partners to present a fresh and open-minded perspective to the Holiday legacy. Billy Holiday and Arthur Herzog's “God Bless The Child,” the leitmotif of this release, opens the disc as a short and solemn prayer, part of a fifteen-minute suite that also includes a somber reading of Holiday and Mal Waldron's “Left Alone,” with an arrangement that owes more to Paul Bley's impressionism than to Waldron's dark lyricism. The ensemble shines on Yedid's arrangement of Sammy Cahn's “I Should Care”: Feldman's fragile, expressive vocal soars, Boasson-Horev alternates beautifully between arco and pizzicato, and Yedid's assured playing anchors this fine interplay. Feldman's original “I'm On Hold” is a temperamental song built on free improvisation by Boasson-Horev and Yedid. Feldman's trio's interpretation of Lewis Allen's “Strange Fruit” is almost reverential. Feldman accentuates this intriguing song with a minimal accompaniment by Yedid and Boasson-Horev. The linkage of Ornette Coleman's “Lonely Woman” to this tribute may be justified by the obvious image the standard projects, but this interpretation lacks the harmolodic flux and sounds too cerebral. The concluding version of “God Bless The Child” binds this impressive tribute with an innocent and soulful prayer, presenting the trio again in some of its most inspired interplay. The dreamy bonus track, “Coda,” is a fine ending to this promising debut, which wisely retains the elegance and the idiosyncratic attitude that was so identified with Holiday. A complete autobiographical work of art

...The Julia Feldman Ensemble`s cd is, in my opinion, the perfect individual " foie gras " dish- it has to be detached from any musical or culinary context. The Ensemble: Julia Feldman- voice, Yitzhak Yedid- piano and Ora Boasson-Horev- double bass, creates music that interlaces between modern classical music, jazz and free improvisation. The seven pieces featured in the album constitute a complete autobiographical work of art, that`s dedicated to the tragic life of Lady Day, to her music and personality. The combination between interpretations of Holiday`s wonderful songs and the Ensemble`s original music is like an open wound that refuses to heal through the whole process of listening. There is no forgiveness, no mercy; there is a throwing of aching truth full of suffering- as it is. …This is not an easy listening record. The music demands patience and restraint, but that is worthwhile eventually. To the faint-hearted it`s recommended to listen to the cd during a number of days. The faint-hearted probably has never heard Ornette Coleman`s "Lonely Woman" before, that`s why it is advisable to them to listen to his version of the song (first), so they could appreciate properly the Ensemble`s interpretation of this marvelous piece. The Julia Feldman Ensemble`s new album- for those who read Billie Holiday`s biography, for those who will read it during the listening period and for those who will read it afterwards. The Julia Feldman Ensemble plays the blues- the way it comprehends it.
