"Hedges’ compositions — which range from broadly atmospheric to more direct and upbeat — are elegant, his songwriting mature and accomplished and his soundscapes provocative and full of depth."
- Citybeat Magazine
Joe Hedges interest in postmodern melding of different ideas from different periods is natural and innate. The album Alchemy is an exploration in textures, arrangements, time signatures, and styles as varied as bluegrass mandolins and electronic sounds, often in the same song. Hedges deals with familiar themes of love, friendship, and family, but uses his own personal (and sometimes strange) symbology, alternating between earnest straightforward story-telling or portraiture and fantasy or conjecture.
Joe Hedges first achieved musical success fronting the rock band July For Kings, formerly of MCA Records, as they worked their way from clubs in Cincinnati to radio stations across the country, including #1 requested on Las Vegas KMXB. In 2007 Hedges made a big aesthetic shift away from July For Kings' alt-rock to create more ambient, contemplative music that became his first solo album Curvature, recorded with acclaimed Los Angeles producer Blumpy (Nine Inch Nails, Filter, Vast). With the release of Alchemy, Hedges showcases his penchant for intriguing lyrics, dramatic and memorable melodies, and a now fully developed brand of experimentalism that is at once progressive and accessible.
