ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

Jiggernaut is not your typical Celtic band, nor are they your typical rock band. Formed in 2000, Jiggernaut is a powerful combination of Celtic, rock and folk music. Drawing from years of experience playing rock and roll, and blues the rhythm section lays down a solid foundation that allows the bagpipes and vocals to soar.

Jiggernaut is passionate, energetic and always fun. Jiggernaut is the rare band that appeals to audiences from six to sixty, their tunes and songs tell the ancient stories and teach lessons of today’s world all in a style that is entirely their own.
Jiggernaut fans have been begging for a new recording almost since the moment the band released their last cd. Evolution (2004) was Jiggernaut’s second release, following the bands critically acclaimed debut recording “In Search Of More.”
Jiggernaut is proud to announce the release of their latest recording “The Well.” Filled with unforgettable characters, and compelling stories, these songs grab and hold the listener from the first note to the last. Featuring powerful, passionate vocals and tight harmonies, these are well written songs set to an irresistible groove.
With more than half of the tracks written by Jiggernaut members, this cd is their most personal work to date. The title track “The Man Who Dug The Well” is a touching tribute to Irish music legend Tommy Makem. “We decided that we had some things to say, and we wanted to use our words to say them” says Deanna Smith Scotland (lead singer and the bands principal songwriter). “Songwriting is risky, and very personal” Smith Scotland continued, “It is wonderful when a songwriter finds an environment that is safe and a group of musicians who embrace original music. That is what I have found in Jiggernaut.” Smith Scotland wrote four of the tracks on the record and collaborated with drummer Matthew Williams on the hard rocking “Martyr.” “Matthew is a very talented arranger”, Smith Scotland asserts, “He takes my songs and finds the hook, the musical theme, then arranges them for a full celtic rock band. Don’t misunderstand, everyone in the band brings ideas to the table, and the finished product is a reflection of the entire band, but Matthew is a visionary, the driving force behind the arrangement of our songs.”
Rodger Harrison on bass and Garren Bagley on guitar and keyboards are also responsible for the incredible vocal harmonies that are immediately recognizable as Jiggernaut . The band has a sound unlike any other. Lead singer Deanna Smith Scotland provides strong lead vocals. She has a voice that has been compared to everyone from Natalie Merchant to Janis Joplin. Irish Music Magazine called her vocals,” powerful and gutsy, yet melodic”. Richard Kean adds a new twist on the ancient art of bagpipes, weaving in and out of the rhythm section one minute, and then laying down a wicked pipe solo in the next. His approach is unconventional, and irreverent, and his musicality is unmatched. Mark Kenneth rounds out the band on accordion, he plays in a style that is unmistakably Scottish, and the energy he adds to Jiggernaut’s music is infectious. He is often the counterpoint to Kean’s piping, keeping the band true to its roots.
Jiggernaut has taken their music all over the United States. From Albany to Houston they have won the hearts of audiences of all ages. They have been featured performers at Grandfather Mountain, Milwaukee Irish Festival, and Walt Disney World. On the regional front, they are favorites at North Texas Irish festival, Houston Highland Games, Texas Scottish Festival, West Texas Festival of the Celts, and Weston Irish Festival.
What People are Saying About Jiggernaut:
Jiggernaut’s music is a confident , brash, fiery mix of Scottish and Irish influences and American blue-collar stadium rock...like a head-on collision of the Tannahill Weavers and Runrig....an outfit worth keeping more than one eye on."
John O’Regan, Irish Music Magazine

"...a promising new addition to the under populated realm of American rock and reel...In Search of More is one of the Top 10 CDs of 2001."
Tom Nelligan, Dirty Linen

"...there's nothing they can't do and little they won't...a group of master artisans who simulate a finely-tuned machine and make their work look like child's play..." Rambles

"...we have the next great Celtic trad/folk/rock band among us..." Ft. Worth Star Telegram

"Jiggernaut is that rare band that can have you bopping at a club or jigging on the heath. What's more...they can do it not only on the same song but somehow at the same time." Houston Press

“A band that knows how to rock, but hasn’t forgotten how to think.”
Brian McNeill

Awesome!
I first heard this album (more specifically, Two Minutes' Silence) on the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. It was love at first listen. No first listening has struck me like this since Dave Carter's When I Go over a decade ago. Of course, I had to give the rest of their work a listen and damn, they're one amazing band. Absolutely worth it. Only weirdness comes from the fact that CDbaby is charging more for full album downloads than the individual songs combined for two of their albums. What's up with that?
