Ditto Everything said Above by Stephanie, Waye and Todd!!!

The sweetness, strength, purity and fullness of Jim Butler's original pieces on this CD demand a wider audience. He has a talent for inventing musical landscapes...Journey to the End of the Night stands on its own as a full bodied tribute to a great novel and its author, and also speaks of the Journey he himself has taken from So Cal, through Texas and Florida, to end up in Japan... Out West where it's Dry evokes the bright light of California's southwest desert air shimmering with hot sunlight...Wild Blue Horizon has a poignant entry, and the mix of saxophone and crash of percusssion reminds me of the ocean breakers, broken foam defining the wild winds in the blue sky...the repeating melody will haunt you, make you yearn for wide open spaces. The ocean puts on a new face, caressing the shoreline, subdued, gentle in Next to the Sea/Beginning of the Morning, and continues this musical exploration of his birthplace. The beginning saxophone lines are as much bird as reed instrument, reminding the listener that this player has great classical roots as well. The first four pieces although different, have a continuity, like a mural,a musical landscape that infuses the listener with desire to live more deeply, and gives him a new fresh perspective in all senses...what comes in the ear colors sight, touch, taste, makes the listener feel fresh, revived, reborn. Seeing You Again has the heavy languid feeling of old memories, some sweet, some hurtful, and the hope for new beginnings entertwined in its memorable melody. Felicidad will make you hope that this great saxophonist, and his great band, have a chance to play and create music in Brazil some day.

This is one of the finest new jazz cds I've heard in a long time
author: Wayne
This is one of the finest new jazz cds I've heard in a long time. Although the artists have presented fresh interpretations of old favorites, the wealth of stunning original compositions is overwhelming. Journeys restored my faith in the vitality of modern jazz. Jazz listeners that haven't yet had the pleasure of experiencing this cd should give it a spin.

A remarkable CD from a very talented musician
author: Stephanie
Just when you think nothing more can possibly be done with “My Funny Valentine”—or at least nothing that isn’t gimmicky and self-conscious—along comes the Jim Butler Quartet to prove otherwise. What a joy it was, when I listened to their recent CD, "Journeys," to feel as though I were hearing the old Rogers and Hart chestnut for the first time, a lovely and touching rendition that somehow manages to free itself from all the other versions and all the expectations they bring with them along the lines of, “Oh great, here we go again.” Well here we *don’t* go again. This Valentine will make you hear the music clean, no strings attached.
And that’s just one lovely surprise in this complex and sparkling mix of the familiar and the new. In addition to “Valentine” there’s Jobim’s evocative “Felicidade,” and a take on “I’m Old Fashioned” which closes the collection perfectly and fittingly. Because in the best sense, Jim Butler is old fashioned: his roots, classical and classic jazz, are apparent but never obvious in the six compositions of his own which complete the CD. Listen to the music, all of it, at least two or three times before you read the liner notes. What Butler intends comes through, unfailingly; but he allows us to experience his intentions in our own personal way. His saxophone is exquisite—rich and complex and wide-ranging, at one with the music and at the same time there to take it to greater, unexplored depths. This is a remarkable body of work from a gifted composer and a very talented group of musicians.

From the dazzling explosion of the opening track to the gorgeous rendering of My Funny Valentine, Jim Butler always plays straight from the heart. His richness of tone color and vibrato is always captivating and appropriate to the variety of musical styles present on this CD.
