Ferguson's Moonstone: a rare gem!
author: Diane Haggerty
Definitely a rare gem, and that's not just a play on words. It's hard to find a good album that's purely solo guitar, especially all original pieces, played fingerstyle (no pic) by a real guitar master. My personal favorites on Moonstone are the title track (a fantastic piece, and over 9 min. long), Night and Encounter from the Spartan Suite, Study Number 6, and Prelude from the Latin American Reflections. All the pieces are excellent, and unique, and it's amazing how he can get the guitar to sound so different on different pieces to convey a certain style or mood -- for example in Moonstone, the guitar sounds like an Indian instrument, whereas in Sumi Dance, it sounds like an Asian instrument. The album Moonstone has a freshness and aliveness to it, and a lot of feeling and depth. I think anyone who likes solo acoustic guitar music will love this album.
