"8 1/2 Stars" - Len Dobbin, Montreal Mirror
"An emerging personal style that's cultivated, compelling, and certainly worth repeat listening." - Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal
Guitarist Jim Head’s first CD as a leader, "Mind's Eye", features his original compositions and performances by Jim Vivian on bass, Owen Howard on drums, and Josh Rager on rhodes. Embracing the early influence of masters such as Jim Hall, John Scofield, and Pat Metheny, as well as contemporaries like Ben Monder and Kurt Rosenwinkel, Head has fashioned a voice that is vital, incisive, and uniquely his own.
Jim Head has made concert, club, and festival appearances across Canada, as well as the U.S., China, and Mexico. He has performed with such notable jazz artists as Sheila Jordan, Tim Hagans, Rob McConnell, Kirk MacDonald, Steve Slagle, Lew Tabackin, Pat LaBarbera, P. J. Perry, Campbell Ryga, John O’Gallagher, Kieran Overs, Jane Bunnett, Andre White, Bob Mover, Hugh Fraser, Remi Bolduc, and Doug Riley. Jim has been featured on numerous CD recordings and has made several appearances on radio and television across Canada. He has taught at McGill University in Montreal, and is currently guitar section head at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Canada.

This is an excellent CD in many ways. The compositions are very well written. They are thoughtful, emotional and really interesting. Equally superb is the ensemble playing. Jim Head's guitar sound is very contemporary and his improvisations are deep, dark and wonderful.
Add to this one of the best rhythm sections Canada has to offer. Jim Vivian's bass playing is strong and rich. Owen Howard is one of my favourite drummers. His brush playing is marvelous and with sticks, he's very creative, hip and supportive. Josh Rager's Rhodes playing is always interesting.
What a great first CD as a leader. I hope we get a chance to hear a lot more from Jim Head's trio / quartet.
