Jimmi Mayes is a Chicago legend who has supported and collaborated with many oustanding artists. He worked as the drummer for Joey Dee and the Starliters for a year and a half. During that time, the band featured none other than Jimmi Hendrix on guitar. Jimmi Mayes later went on to work with Hendrix on some of his studio recordings, including the song My Friends from the album First Rays Of The Rising Sun.
What Jimi Hendrix was to guitar, Little Walter was to the amplified harmonica. What Marvin Gaye was to Motown, James Brown was to Funk. What Jimmi Mayes was to them all was a trusted collaborator and musical thinker. While employed mainly as a drummer in his early years, Mayes became identified as a musical director; the person in charge of the big picture. His resume includes:
Joey Dee & the Starliters Tommy Hunt from the Flamingo
Jimi Hendrix Martha Reed & The Vandella's
Marvin Gaye
James Brown
Martha Reeves (Martha & the Vandellas)
Frankie Lymon
The Shirelles
Little Walter
Jimmy Reed
Elmore James
Lacy Gibson
McKinley Mitchell
This CD features new and historic recordings, including Jimmi's collaboration with McKinley Mitchell, which turned out to be Mitchell's last recording session. Both songs, I Need You and All Of A Sudden are here.
Jimmi's new CD features the recent recording of Love Trap, written for Jimmi by Tommy Hunt who was one the singers and driving force behind the Flamigos. Jimmi's newest CD features some of hist best work to date.
