You've entered the thought process behind these song titles:

Almost Human

Despite its nutty uber-Gap Band funk feel, is actually quite an infectious dance tune.
The wah solo was a mistake gone good because the pedal was incorrectly placed in the
Effects path hence the weirdness.

King O’ the Jungle

My nod to Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 was 9” you can hear his vocal line in the Guitar melody.
Its also in Ab due to my penchant to practice Horn tunes by Parker and Clifford Brown.
But I redeem myself with an enjoyable shift to C#- for the Octavia-type solo.

Wonderland

This was inspired by the Police, but as it often happens I bob and weave in to funk and 80s British bass grooves (check out the guitar solo) need I say more?
Bottomline its a very singable melody.

Beslan

The tragedy of the Ukrainian children and my fondness for sad melodies wrote this for me.Sure I sound a bit like Jeff …but in good way, don’t you think?

Orinoco

Picture Stevie Wonder canoeing (with a guide) on a South American Rain Forest river.
Alright,so he wasn’t in a canoe. You gotta love Taylor’s fretless bass on this track.

Trojan Horse

I lost a friend in the Iraq war in 2004.A few months later I was talking with a guy who
Survived his tour of duty.As he told his story of his deployment the Bass line hit me.
Choppers landing in brutal heat kicking up toxic debris you get the picture… this is one
Of my favorite tunes ever.

Just a Kid Havin’ Fun

Great Yardbirds style riff that dips into a Taking Care of biz groove. The melody is the closer on this track. The ride-out solo has some ad-lib Parker stuff but that’s cool its all
Music stew anyway.

Cowboy does Jail Time

I love corny melodies so I wrote this in C, wandered in to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ab backyard.
Stumbled in to A- for the solo (stuck an old Fender Champ in a closet) and then gave it a sentimental ending.

More Money Than G-D

A nasty Prince meets Sly Stone groove that Joel just kills!Susan Tedeschi’s Bass player was hangin’ out with a Reggae singer in the studio while we cut this and started doing some killer rhymes over the groove. As for the G-D spelling, it’s a jewish thing.

Jammin’ with Ezra

Again with the Hendrix stuff, oy vey whats with me.I wrote this for my friend’s band it turns out his son Ezra liked it more than the band did.A modified Tele, a Tube Screamer
Lets see a Fulltone wah pedal (pathed correctly this time)Thru a Cesar Diaz Vibroverb.
Bingo a good jam!

Trauma Centre

I work in Medical Imaging and have studied Neuro-Anatomy,spent a lot of time looking at T-1 and T-2 MRIs, (No I’m not Doctor I just play one in a Funk/Rock band).Back to point I went to a Medical lecture given by an ER Doctor and his description of the ER in
SF General on a Saturday nite was down right fascinating. So I wrote a song about it and goes a little like…

This is a fine set of tunes that hangs together well & the more I hear them, the more I find to like. Some are slithery & sexy(Orinoco),some sad(Beslan),some almost sweet(Just a Kid Havin'Fun),some kinda sinister(More Money Than G-D).These are all sly, insinuating composiions, tinged with funk & subtle wit.

Author: Michael Carlucci // Winter Hours I had the privilege of working with Jim on our 1989 Chrysalis LP where he played a beautiful violin part. This LP of his has surpassed my wildest expectations. Fans of late '70s funk fusion should take notice, they just don't make them like this anymore.

This is a great "first mainstream" outing that is as restrained as it is mature. Jimmy can wail with the best of them but here he stretches out and offers something for the Jeff Beck crowd as well as those "smooth jazz" stations that could so desperately use some soulful and inspired guitar oriented music. Almost Human sets the stage in that it is melodic enough to get stuck your head. Jimmy Mac can go through a liteny of parts of his style without sounding contrived. For instance, in Cowboy Does Jail Time, I hear touches of Steve Morse. Trojan Horse has a touch of (dare I say it) Steve Vai. Orinoco is to me the highlight of what this CD is about. I hate to attach a name here. It`s an original voice. Always an interesting note around the corner. Same for Beslan. Simply beautiful guitar playing. King o` the Jungle has some of the best clean tone as well as "classic Fuzz tone" you`re likely to hear. Definitely not afraid to get out some of the classic stomps and make `em do what they were made for... We should all be so talented as to be able to phrase like this. So much control here. This is one of those CD`s that makes you look to see what else is out there from this guy. The dude`s never at a loss for a hook or a cool groove. It`ll be nice to see where he goes from here. Keep `em coming

  • Fresh, dynamic, creative... Excellently written music for music lovers!

This CD is quite a compilation with a wide variety of influences from Jeff Beck to Stevie Wonder, Steve Vai and more. This bluesy, jazzy, rockin` set shows just how dynamic Jimmy Mac can be. I found even the slower numbers such as Beslan are suprisingly complex. The more I listen to this album the more musical phrases I find indicate a musician who understands how to write as much as he knows how to play. I enjoy they way he strings the notes together. I had to listen a couple of times (you never catch everything on the first pass) but, once I understood his phrasing, I found his compositions very refreshing, creative, and unique. I would say Jimmy Mac is a musician other musicians would enjoy listening to as well as the casual music lover.

The album boasts several standout tracks. “Trojan Horse” starts off with a strong mid-tempo bass groove by Fischer (great tone; he uses an octave divider to give it extra oomph.) Mac enters with some softly strummed chords at first, in juxtaposition to the muscular bassline. Then his lead guitar sings out a poignant motif that is reminiscent of Jeff Beck’s work, including some “outside” soloing. The feel is maintained solidly throughout by Fischer and Griffin, who provide a great foundation for Mac to have his play. Mr. Griffin has the intro honors on “More Money Than G-d,” and he doesn’t hesitate to say what’s on his mind. His ten-second drum intro and subsequent high-hat shuffle groove is one of the highlights of the track. Next album, give this guy more space to stretch, will ya’? There is a strong tongue-in-cheek melody line; even without lyrics or vocals, you can hear the guitar sing: “makes more money that G-d.” Good songwriting, that. Overall, this is very good for a self-produced introduction. Mac and mates are talented, and from the sound of things, they obviously enjoyed making the album. Most any one listening to it will discern it’s a well-made album with good intent. ROBERT KAYE
