Jimmy Payne is an entertainer who, as he comments, comes from the heart of rural America.
Born in Arkansas, grew up in Missouri, is the youngest of eleven children.
He learned to play Guitar at the age of sixteen. While still in his teens, he, and his niece Betty, had there on Radio Show over KTCB in Malden Missouri.
In 1966, he signed a five year contract with Epic Records. His first single with Epic "What Does I t Take"' became a hit in a few markets and sold several thousand records but never gathered enough momentum to break into the Billboard national charts. Six months later, his close friend Jim Glaser,
was working on a new song and asked Jimmy to help finish it. They wrote on it all night and by morning it was finished. In a couple weeks Jimmy recorded it for his second single under the direction of legendary producer Billy Sherrill. The song was "Woman, Woman, have you got cheating on your mind. A couple months later his record was playing on the Radio in Los Angeles, Columbia Record Producer, Jerry Fuller, heard it and took it to a group he had just signed. author: Bonnie AhleWHAT A GREAT CD. WHAT A GREAT SINGER AND SONGWRITER. HOPES HE KEEPS ON MAKING C D'S. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
A wonderful selection of old and new songs.
author: Alan C. HardistyThis is a wonderful CD. Jimmy Payne is blessed with a natural gift when it comes to delivering sacred music. I did have his gospel album on the Word label years ago and it is great to have these songs issued again - with two new titles. So refreshing and a wonderful selection of old and new songs. More please!
Beautiful Country/ Gospel
author: KEN RUSSELLThis CD has certainly re-kindled my love for good old country gospel. So relaxing when behind the wheel on a long journey. I certainly want to hear more of Jimmy's cd's.
Highly recommended.
author: Karen WanleyJimmy Payne is probably better known as the co-writer of the million selling song Woman, Woman for Gary Puckett and the Union Gap in 1967. Not true! Jimmy is a fine entertainer, too, with his musical roots firmly placed in gospel and early country music with a career spanning nearly four decades. This album shows Jimmy not only as a respected country/gospel singer but also as a fine writer. Twelve of the fourteen titles here were originally released in England in 1978 as still sound as fresh today as they did back then. Two new tracks were especially recorded for this cd - When Mama Prayed and When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder - and fit in so well you would think it was part of the original album - which goes to show what a fresh and modern feel this cd has. It offers a splendid mixture of both old and new sacred music with compositions from Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Jim Glaser and Jimmy himself providing that classic country feel. Highly recommended. KW.
