Composing and recording instrumental music has been the focus of my work as a guitarist for a long time, but it was songs of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and Neil Young that I listened to and learned from when I first began to play. I suppose their music has guided me all along, and I hope that some of the songs I've put down here rise to a reasonable level of artistry through their inspiration and influence. More than anyone else, Mae Robertson, a fine singer from Birmingham who I've performed and recorded with over the past several years, has encouraged me to find my voice as a songwriter. Craig Carothers is a brilliant songwriter and producer living in Nashville who has also been very helpful to me in this process. His critiques and suggestions have been invaluable to what you'll hear on this disc.
The musicians who played on this record also brought quite a lot to the table, musically and otherwise, and I'm grateful for their talents and friendship. Special thanks to Bud Brown and Higher Ground Studio for recording the bed tracks. Great engineering, as always. Also, thanks to Clyde Kendrick, Herb Trotman and Jim Stiff at Fretted Instruments, Pete Huttlinger, Bill Cooley, Tim Bays, Steve Nelson, Nancy King, Dana Smithberg, Tommy Ray, Larry Eldredge, Webb Robertson, Gary, Merle, and everyone at Local Color Café, Rick Gustafson, Dick Schoemer, Mike Johnston, Scott Hildebrand, Steve Hofschield, Kevin Zimmermann, Jerry & Cleo Messner, and all the folks who have come out to hear me play. Thanks!
