Album Notes

Jim Self, a studio musician in Los Angeles since 1974, has played music on over 1000 Hollywood motion pictures and hundreds of records and TV Shows. His tuba was the "Voice of the Mothership" in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and he played prominent solos on Jurassic Park, Dennis the Menace, Hook, Sleepless in Seattle, Casper, Home Alone and others. He is First Tuba for composers John Williams, James Horner, James Newton Howard, John Debney, Mark Isham, Marc Shaiman, Tom Newman, Ira Newborn, and others.

Active in the L.A. jazz scene on tuba/bass trombone/bass, he played and recorded with many groups including the Don Ellis Band, Marty Paich Dek-tette and Jon Hendricks "Evolution of the Blues". These experiences led to producing his own jazz and classical recordings and to an interest in writing. His compositions and arrangements include solo and chamber works for brass, winds and percussion. Jim Self is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

Some amazingly witty and sometimes just wonderful takes on some classic American tunes make each listen a new adventure.
