Album Notes

Jim Self is one of Hollywood busiest studio musicians and a famous tuba player who's credits include the "Voice of the Mothership" in John Williams score to Close Encounters of the Third Kind and over 1400 other movie scores. New Stuff is a jazz recording that features Tuba, Electronic Valve Instrument, Guitar, Vibes, Bass and Drums. First released in 1988, it was one of the first uses of the EVI in jazz. Jim plays the Tubas, EVI, Bass Trombone and is the bass player on the recording with Jon Kurnick on Guitar, John Magnussen, Vibes and Harvey Mason, Drums. It is very eclectic with straight ahead jazz, latin jazz, new age, funk, a movie theme and even a piece by J.S. Bach--a REAL Jazz Fusion album.
