Avery Theater Concert

This past Saturday night our community was graced with an amazing show at the Avery by a husband-wife duo called “Jive Mountain.” Their performance was billed as “American Roots” music. I attended, expecting to be mildly and pleasantly entertained with some typical country or bluegrass music. The performance far exceeded my expectations. I was not just entertained; I was enchanted, delighted, mesmerized, awe-struck. Susan Madley (on electric upright bass and vocals) and her husband, Jesse Philips (guitar and vocals) performed music ranging from brassy blues from the 1920's, to plaintive cowboy ballads of the 40's, to familiar folk tunes of the 60's, to modern compositions. Susan's voice was at times gentle and angelic, and we sat in blissful reverie as her clear voice soared on “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” On other tunes her voice was bold and sassy, as in the blues chorus, “While you were steppin' out, someone else was steppin' in.” Jesse's harmonies and leads created a perfect blend, as did his skilled guitar accompaniment. During the evening Jesse also shared some selections of poetry, spoken in his deep and mellow voice. (A particular favorite of the evening was “Forgetfulness,” by former National Poet Laureate Billy Collins. Look for it on Google or through our local library.) “Jive Mountain”s lively, engaging, and humorous style brought frequent cheers and applause from the audience, and we all participated with enthusiasm as Susan led us in a “hand jive” to accompany their performance of “Shortnin' Bread.” They received two standing ovations from the audience, and their promise to return to the Avery was met with wild enthusiasm.
The music of “Jive Mountain” was indeed wonderful, but here is what made their performance even more remarkable: this couple,who have been married for forty years, had successful careers (she a teacher, he a therapist), and raised three talented children, are now traveling the west in an Airstream trailer, with a chosen mission of seeking out worthy causes and performing FOR FREE. That's right, they donate all of their time and talents to help raise funds for whatever school, community, or service group asks them to play. Thus, all of the money from tickets and concessions at Saturday night's performance went directly to the Avery Theater, and “Jive Mountain” accepted no payment other than our gratitude. Talk about sharing one's blessings with other people! This couple certainly lives that on a daily basis.
