notes

A native of Long Island, Janet began performing in the early 1980s in New York City's Greenwich Village.

After moving to Wisconsin in 1985, she became established as a solo vocalist and guitarist, with much of her repertoire gleaned from the Tin Pan Alley era.

In 1998 The Janet Macklin Quartet was formed.

The jazz quartet has performed at many state festivals, including Green Bay's Bayfest and Art Street, Appleton's Art in the Park, Madison's State Street Art Fair, The Ripon and Neenah Jazz Festivals, The Kettle Moraine Jazz Festival in West Bend, Milwaukee's Bastille Days and Summerfest, as well as Madison's Isthmus Jazz Festival.

The band's club dates include regular appearances throughout the state, including numerous venues in Madison and Milwaukee.

Janet is a 2001 WAMI nominee for best female vocalist. (Wisconsin Area Music Industry)

The Janet Macklin Quartet consists of Janet on guitar and vocals, and various combinations of some of the finest jazz drummers, saxophonists, and upright bass players in Wisconsin The band explores the jazz music of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, and features works of the following artists, composers and lyricists: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Nat King Cole, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Django Reinhart, the Gershwins, Harold Arlen and E.Y.

Harburg, Fats Waller, Cole Porter, Dorothy Fields & Jimmy McHugh, Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer, Benny Goodman and Chick Webb, Duke Ellington, and Gus Kahn.

The group regularly performs a number of original compositions as well.

In 1995, Janet became involved in theatre and has performed as an actor, composer, and musician throughout Eastern Wisconsin, from Green Bay to Milwaukee.

She appeared weekly on the public radio program, "Hotel Milwaukee," as a vocalist with the house band and as a regular featured performer during the 1996-1997 season.

Janet is also an educator working in the elementary school classroom.

She was a 2000 recipient of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Teacher Fellowship.

She has developed a promotional partnership with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Fox Cities and Best Friends of Neenah-Menasha in order to increase awareness of the need for mentors to provide positive adult role models for area youngsters.

She was most recently a featured artist in the Women in Jazz partnership project between the Oshkosh Opera House Foundation and the Women's Fund of the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation.

Janet's newest recording project is titled after her most recent original piece, "I Think of You." The songs on the CD are performed by the same talent regularly heard live with the Quartet and also feature performances by special guest artists.

Two of the selections are performed using only vocals and guitar, giving listeners the opportunity to hear Janet's unique style as a solo artist.

The selections include standards such as Benny Goodman's "Stompin' at the Savoy," Django Reinhart instrumentals, and more obscure songs, such as Jane Morgan's "Baseball, Baseball." The CD is currently receiving airplay on radio stations throughout the state.

The recording is available at record stores, at all performance venues, and through the website, www.janetmacklin.com, which also contains articles, reviews, audio clips, and an updated performance schedule.

I've seen Janet Macklin several times at various venues in Northeast Wisconsin. The CD is every bit as good as seeing her in person-- sultry, dreamy music and solid technical musicianship. Great mood music for a candlelight dinner on a rainy night...
