Album Notes

J. MARTY COPE, organist
with TIM ZIMMERMAN and the KING'S BRASS

The pipe organ at Calvary Church contains over ten thousand "voices" which attempt to fulfill the desire of the hymn writer, Johann Mentzer: "O that I had a thousand voices, And with a thousand tongues could tell, Of Him in Whom the earth rejoices, Who all things wisely does and well! My grateful heart would then be free, To tell what God has done for me."

As a boy, J. MARTY COPE sat in awe of the pipe organ and organist in his grandparents’ church. The colorful, enthusiastic playing and the energized congregational song united to light in him a fire of excitement and an enduring interest in organ music. J. Marty has studied under Dan Miller, Devon Hollingsworth, Paul Manz, William Bates, John Ferguson, Marilyn Keiser, and Larry Smith.

From 1999 through 2001, J. Marty served as organist at Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina where he administered the Tenth Anniversary Series, celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Calvary Grand Organ installation.

He then attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota where he studied organ, voice, church music, and conducting and sang in the acclaimed St. Olaf Choir. Later, he completed graduate studies in organ performance and choral conducting at Indiana University. Currently J. Marty serves on the music staff at Park Cities Presbyterian Church in Dallas, TX.

In playing, J. Marty desires to create excitement for the listener, making the organ accessible to the layperson. He gratefully acknowledges the Source of his gifts and dedicates them to the glory of his Redeemer.

TIM ZIMMERMAN and the KING'S BRASS provide a creative approach to worship for young and old alike through the "best in sacred brass music." By teaming together, these Christian professionals from around the United States perform their original arrangements as heard on eight recordings. For more than twenty years, the King's Brass has performed over one hundred concerts each season with three trumpets, three trombones, a tuba, keyboards, and percussion. Playing a wide variety of music from Gabrieli to hymn classics, from Handel to jazz spirituals, from Christmas carols to patriotic marches, The King's Brass uses all corners of the concert hall to lift hearts and spirits in praise. www.kingsbrass.org

Excellence!
author: V. Myers
J. Marty brings the organ into the average listener's realm of enjoyment without losing the grand reverence and awe of the instrument or the music. I've never found a CD of the "king of instruments" that die-hard musicians and average joe's alike could enjoy until I found this one. there is excellence in every note! Every one that I've given it to comes back to me to tell me how they can't seem to get enough of the CD! Great selection of pieces. The brass is the crowing touch (not that it needs one).
