notes

A girl walks into a bar to see ‘The Erotic Adventures of the Static Chicken.’ Though she’s disappointed that the band is neither sexy nor covered in electrically charged feathers, by the end of the night she’s onstage belting out a drunken rendition of “Stormy Monday” and local bands are clamoring for her to sit in with them.

Four years later, she’s living in Chicago with two albums, multiple national tours, radio play on hundreds of stations around the world, and critical acclaim from some of the industry’s top experts to her credit.

Since the night with the chicken, Julie’s music has been featured on XM Radio and Pandora.com, and she has performed on WUWM’s “Cafe Tonight” in Milwaukee, Kick FM’s “Beer for Breakfast” in Winnipeg, and on dozens of college and independent stations across the country. She has appeared onstage at Austin’s SXSW, Milwaukee’s Summerfest, and Albuquerque’s Hyperactive Music Fest, and at clubs from the Walnut Room in Denver to WXPN’s World Cafe Live in Philadelphia and the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.

Sony sponsored the Julie Moffitt Remix Contest in 2006 to launch her second studio album, ‘The Stolen EP’ (Burst Records). The album’s first single, “Try,” was featured on the 2006 GoGirlsMusicFest CD and Australia’s popular Sounds Like Cafe series (volume 14). In February 2007, “Let Him Be” (also from ‘The Stolen EP’) appeared in Paste Magazine’s Issue 28 sampler alongside new tracks from Lucinda Williams and The Shins.

2007 was a breakout year for Julie, kicking off with a nomination for Best Acoustic Act by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry just as she was leaving Milwaukee for Chicago’s lush musical scene. She enjoyed her first headlining spot at Summerfest, spent the fall racking up over 20,000 miles on a college tour across the Midwest and Canada, and opened for major acts including Sara Bareilles (Epic), Mat Kearney (Columbia), Matt Nathanson (Acrobat), The Gufs and Willy Porter.

The icing on the proverbial cake came in December, when Julie beat out hundreds of other artists to be named both the Critics’ Pick and the fan-voted $10,000 Singer/Songwriter Fenom titles in the international online competition FameCast.com.

Julie started off 2008 with two performances at SXSW, a week at the ASCAP Expo in Los Angeles, and an opening slot for the band America, along with plans to head into the studio to record her next single. She plays regularly in Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Nashville.

A nice album but if you like songs like 'slow' and 'stolen', then make sure that you don't miss the newer EP, entitled 'The Stolen'. The newer mixes are even better! Honestly! Check them out on MySpace if you don't believe me!

  • Awesome! I listen on my way to work in the morning!

This is a great CD! I listen to it on my way to work and the way home! I have a friend who got it also, and she loves it too! Way to go Julie.

This cd is awesome, I never want to stop listening to it. It really helps when I'm studying for an exam, it's so easy listening but so unique. I never get tired of it!

  • As real as it gets...

Julie's first offering grabbed my ears, senses, and interest from the very first track - Movin' on - and didn't let go until the end of the last track - All she really wants - As I've come to expect from Julie, her vocal talents are a moving and very pleasing mix of control, mood, and honest emotion. Soft as a whisper and then as powerful as a thunderstorm... when the mood requires. Top that with Julie's keen ability to write meaningful lyrics that both move and keep you interested. Real world relationship topics... that we can all relate to. In today's world of over produced, selected market, popish lyric offerings; Everything I Never Asked For is a refreshing and very unique change. It's real... as real as it gets from the heart. Some CDs take a while to grow on you... not this one. Play it once... you'll be hooked. My favorite track is track 6, Slow. Great tune all the way around. My only small criticism is that on a couple of the tracks Julie's vocals seem to get buried in the mix. I can't wait for her next one... Come on Julie... get on it !!

  • top notch vocalist with REAL songs

There are two things that really pull me in when I listen to this: Julie's stellar vocal chops (from sultry to fiery) and honest lyrics. When she sings about aching for the open road and wanting to move past old flames, it's not done in cliche pop style: it's genuine. Some songs have a narrative feel and Julie does well by adding little touches that everyone can relate to. The reason I didn't give this album all five stars is really no fault of Julie's. There are some songs that musically didn't appeal to me. I would like to hear more stuff along the lines of 'Stolen' (definitely a standout track) and the version of 'Strange Infatuation' here doesn't hold a candle to the classic 'smoky piano bar' jazz version on her demo. I am eager to hear what she is capable of with a different producer. Keep an eye out for this girl...she's on the come up!

  • Great album
    author: Barry

Every song is quite different. Not a cookie cutter album. The track called "second guesses" is super.

  • Julie's voice will captivate you!
    author: Carrie from Kokomo, IN

Absolutely love it! Between Julie's voice, the lyrics, and the guitar riffs, this is a well rounded CD. You can actually hear the passion in her voice and music. Track 5 swept me off my feet! I will forever be a fan!

  • Fantastic!
    author: Matt

Well worth the wait, this first CD is awesome. Thanks for the voice, the emotion, and as always, the music.

  • The soundtrack to your next seduction.

I think I might have to buy another copy of this CD - one for the stereo at home and one for the car. Julie Moffitt has a great voice that I cant get out of my head. I'm really looking forward to seeing where she goes with her music and I'll gladly follow along.
