I am a musician, singer/songwriter and teacher. I grew up in a family that loved to sing. Long car-trips were filled with hours of singing old folk, union, civil -rights and peace songs. As a teenager, I went overseas for a year abroad in Israel, and 22 years later, moved back to the United States! During that extended "year," I learned to sing Israeli folk songs, and dance to Palestinian drums and Egyptian violins.
When I began teaching music, I realized that asking children to sit still went against their natural inclination to move. I discovered children learn and appreciate the music better when they are allowed to move.
When my own children were born, I realized that before children can speak, they sing and dance, moving their whole bodies, humming along, often perfectly in tune! This collection of songs is dedicated to the hundreds of children who have danced their way through the seasons with me over the past number of years!
A special thanks to my husband and children.........who put up with my glazed eyes and guitar and piano pounding when I am hatching a new song in my head!

Dancing Through the Seasons

I have been listening, loving and learning this entire collection so I can teach it all to my 23 classes each week of preschoolers.
I especially enjoy the simplicity of the recording. It takes courage to refrain from enhancing a CD with a lot of background sound effects and orchestration. This CD is pure Joanie Calem!
Her voice is crystal clear which makes it a joy for listening. Her diction is perfect which makes it easy to understand each lyric. These are probably the qualities that made CD BABY compare her to Joan Baez.
Joanie's use of words and choice of key signatures give each song a unique color and texture that create a tapestry of delight.
Bravo, Joanie Calem!

Dancing Through the Seasons
author: Brigid Finucane
As an early childhood music teacher it is always a joy to discover a singer/songwriter
like Joanie Calem. Her use of language is poetic, evoking different experiences and
seasons with grace and indelible imagery. Two of the nicest winter songs I’ve heard know are on this collection: ‘Snow is Falling’, built on a simple scale, is light and airy as a snowflake. My 3-5 year old students really took off with it, playing step bells or resonator bars for accompaniment. 'Wintertime', a good rocking song, casts a dreamy spell and captures the beauty of the season. The chorus,‘Wintertime is cold time, slow time, snow time. Winter is the soft time of the year’, perfectly separates the exploration of animals active in winter.
Evocative language is also beautifully used in ‘Looking for Whales’, ‘Butterflies’ and ‘Autumn Leaves.’ The zipper song, ‘Spring Is A-Comin’ and ‘It Rained a Mist’ are welcome songs that greatly expand classroom activities.
Calem is not only a fine wordsmith, she also crafts distinctive, often haunting, melodies.
I would recommend this collection to teachers, parents, and libraries who are open to a unique, non-commercial artist who has wonderful things to share.
