Offbeat Superb

Ok, so her vinegary roots voice seems like Lucinda Williams sister or something-- if colored with some of the irony and bemused 'caberet' sense of recent Judy Henske. Once you get used to the voice I think this is utterly amazing. If not quite the complete 'concept album' sense of 'Bad Girls in Search of the Truth,' it's still great. Romantic, spiritual, touching moments come and go, and marvelous lyrical imagery once you start listening. "Rock in My Shoe" is smoldering roots rock worthy of Lucinda (better IMO, but that's just me). And marvelous intricate, varied, musical accompaniment too. Some songs cowritten by the underrated, excellent David Halley too. Right up there with Terry Allen, Joe Ely, Jimmy Dale Gilmore and others of the 'art country rock' circle in Lubbock. And JCP occupies a very special, unique place in that group.
