After spending the better part of 20 years as a female guitarist in a man's world of rock n roll cover bands, Christine decided to focus solely on creating original work."My music is a catharses. It keeps me sane (almost)." I was amazed to discover how much I had to say."
Jocelyn Porter Project is a tribute to my family & to my Mother who gave up so many of her own creative dreams to raise me & nurture the artist in me.Thanks to her & to my Father for putting that Sears guitar I begged for under the Christmas tree so many years ago.
On "Metaphors and Musings," she gets it all out, crafting compelling, emotionally riveting narratives. Melody isn't as important as delivering, raw, honest passion.

"I tend to write in metaphors a lot of times. Can I equate it with another metaphor?" she said with a laugh. "My songs are kind of like photographs, just little snapshots of time. And I try to put the person into that situation, where they're looking at a picture and can maybe hopefully relate to it in some way."
"I was always happy to be the chick in the band. I played around in various seedy venues from the age of 13 on."
EVENTUALLY, SHE GREW DISSATISFIED. That had nothing to do with banging out garage tunes with the guys; it had more to do with playing cover songs.
"I spent the last 10 years focusing solo on acoustic instruments - guitar and mandolin - and just kind of discovered my voice," Volk said. "I spent a lot of time writing and just trying to say what I have to say through my music. Playing cover songs just wasn't doing it for me. It wasn't giving me the satisfaction I need to get out of music."
"I wanted it raw and that's what it is."
My major influences are Patti Smith, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell. I like people who are storytellers - Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan."
Other influences - such as P.J. Harvey and Alanis Morissette - come to mind, too, because Volk deals with the psychological dynamics of relationships.
This record is a labor of love for all that were involved in it's conception.

A stunning performance
author: JNP
JPP did a stunning performance on the coffee side stage Saturday night at the Raise the Roof benefit for the Roadhouse Theatre. Sharing tunes from last year’s hit CD, such as the immortalized “Bad Girlfriend” song, and cleverly mixed with new material (“Candy”, Mile 262”) Chris broke in new strings and the audience chanted “four more years!”

First impression: ...hasn't this singer had any good relationships?
author: James A. Kurre, Ph.D.
Bad Dog starts the CD off with a real jolt to the listener; you know you're in for something different right away.
Second impression: I found the humor more. Once I got thru the whole thing once, on the second time I was able to listen deeper, and began to enjoy it.

For Christine Volk, melody isn't as important as delivering raw, honest passion.
author: Dave Richards- Erie Times News
Christine Volk never met a metaphor she didn't like. In fact, she's so fond of that literary device that she's named her decade-in-the-making solo CD "Metaphors and Musings."
Take "Bad Dog," the stark, harrowing first track. A woman is so subservient to her significant other that she compares her relationship role to a dog that's willing to do anything to please his master.
"I'm a bad dog, and I need to be put down," she sings.
On "Rereading You," Volk likens a lover to a good book she can't put down. Then there's "Insect," the musical equivalent of a Franz Kafka/David Cronenberg merger.
"I'll never forget that night when you turned into an insect right before my eyes. I'll never forget that night when you up and metamorphosized," Volk sings caustically, her voice dripping contempt.

Her live performance is just as compelling and complex !
author: Harry Volk
I know I'm biased as hell but after all these years of listening to other musicians and artists; her talent and style is rock-solid. I've played this CD at least 20 times (maybe more) and have tried to set aside my personal feelings at times, to be an objective listener and can only say.....I'm impressed! Her phrasing, metaphors, vocal images and delivery are wonderful and her playing is outstanding. AND that's me being truly objective. (Christine's father)
