For Joe Diorio's many fans, the appearance of a new album is a significant event. Among jazz guitarists, Joe Diorio occupies a legendary place as a glorious and incomparable musician . . . a "bad-axe" cat.
This publication of Diorio's longtime working trio "in concert" reveals a musical partnership that displays Diorio's gentle beauty in its best setting. Bassist Bob Magnusson is without equal, a player whose rich tone and melodic brilliance have earned the highest praise from jazz giants such as Kenny Barron, Benny Golson, and Jimmy Rowles. Drummer Jim Plank -- celebrated by luminaries such as Hank Jones, Art Farmer, and John Hicks -- is a perfect complement to the intimate dynamics of Diorio's music.

For those who think of jazz guitar as a bit stiff or overly polite when compared with great horn players, this CD really opens things up. Joe is clearly deeply invested and is having a great time with his trio. The sounds of the venue come through loud and clear - people at tables talking, clapping, dropping silverware - but it all adds up to a feeling of risk, of unpredictability. Really fun, I love it.
