Album Notes

Joe Hillyer is a New York City area based songwriter. He has adapted 14 songs from the plays and poems of Shakespeare and given them a contemporary folk and bluegrass setting, featuring an acoustic ensemble of guitar, fiddle, dobro, mandolin, bass, banjo, harmonica, and lots of harmonies. While this collection of original music explores the connection of Elizabethan musical traditions with its later cousin bluegrass and Appalachian mountain music, the main emphasis of these songs is on the beauty of Shakespeare's lyrical structure, and how relevant they still are to the modern listener.

Mighty fine pickin' and singin'!!!

This CD has continued to be a favorite for my entire family. There is something for all listeners here - excellent guitar and dobro playing from Bob Berzack, (who also engineered and co-produced this rich-sounding recording at the legendary Big Mess in NJ), fabulous mandolin from Todd Collins, the sweet violin of Bob Mastro, Joe Hillyer's warm, liquid fingerpicking, all the acoustic players who make it so interesting, and of course the incredible vocal talents of Joe, Ennis Smith, Ellen McQueeny, and Louise Rozett. The stories of Shakespeare really come alive in an unexpected way here. You will find yourself singing along and knowing Shakespeare's words, which is a reward all by itself. Highly recommend!!!

We have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this creative, highly enjoyable recording. Who would have thought you could create such entertaining, varied music using Shakespeare's words? All of our friends who have listened to the recording, often with some intial skepticism, have agreed it is very pleasant listening. More, please!
