Album Notes

Powerful and true to life, The Dark After Dawn is a haunting journey into the mind of one man caught in a world of war, environmental destruction and financial ruin. The year is 2009.

The follow up to Joel Steven’s second release Fathomless, The Dark After Dawn was conceived and written in the troubled years of 2008 and 2009, a time when fear and uncertainty became the fabric of everyday life across our faltering world.

A conceptual collection of songs comparable in scope to great albums like Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and Sting’s “Ten Summoner’s Tales", The Dark After Dawn pulls the listener through deepening tunnels of hope and despair, where each song adds a new element to the tale, yet can still stand amazingly strong alone.

True to his form, Joel Steven wrote and produced The Dark After Dawn to be rich in diversity. From the crushing and sinister “Time to Bleed”, to the soaring acoustic guitar driven “Listen”, and on to the tongue-in-cheek sarcasm of “Assisted Suicide”, Steven’s songs reflect the winding pathways of human emotion and the twisting moods of its narrator.

A lover of the English language from an early age, Joel took his talent for writing poetry and fiction into the realm of songwriting. His strong sense of imagery which he crafted as a poet and storyteller was infused with his love for melody, creating a sonic landscape where words and music reinforce one another, taking the listener on a
journey where each song has a setting all it’s own.

The Dark After Dawn

Joel Steven's Scales New Heights All of Steven's talents come together on one new anthem for our time: "The Dark After Dawn". At turns sensitive, upbeat or rollicking-he conjures up an IMAX-like treat for the mind. The songs take the listener through a dreamscape where surprise after tasty surprise waits around every turn. All this is tied together in the surreal world of 2009 where old stuctures and foundations of our world crumble away to reveal new unknowns. Three outstanding "road trip" tunes in "Assisted Suicide", "Overjoyed" and "The Longing" were worth the price of admission for me. Other songs with everything from spot-on slide guitar work to sweet piano solos and brilliant acoustic guitar provided me one bonus after another. Don't wait-the "Dawn" is upon us!!!

Light Breaks Through in "Dark After Dawn"
author: Jeff Benegar
Joel Steven's third musical installment, "The Dark After Dawn" marks his most mature record to date. It is a seemingly personal and self-reflective canon of a man trying to maintain sanity in such a wearisome craft, and the journey of an artist's turbulent struggle to find solace within a withering world and mankind's self destructive nature. The record begins with melodic tracks like, "Sunfall", fraught with eerie poetry and haunting tales just as the album title suggests. Delving deeper, Joel's straining vocals conjure up raw emotion coupled with incendiary licks on the guitar that bring a comforting familiarity and extreme vindication we expect from any great Rock and Roll artist. Coincidentally, like any great "Rock" record or good meal, "The Dark After Dawn" is best listened to when accompanied by your favorite whiskey.

Sweet and tough as nails
author: D. Grove
Joel's newest album has blown me away! His voice is full and sweet when he needs it and tough as nails when the time is right. His acoustic is bright and clear and played so deliberately, precisely but with obvious feeling. Overall production was just outstanding, whether it was a simple song or a huge production number. Now let's talk about what Joel has to say. Again, Wow! I can almost taste the frustration and anger that was coursing through his veins when these words spewed forth. In Misted I wanted to cry out that it was going to be alright. Ahh... Misted, the driving snare, bringing up emotions of a firing line as he allows his love to glide away. Powerful imagery backed by powerful soundscape. I know many Joel songs, and I think 2 or 3 of my favorites are now from this album, my current top being "Riders on the Lake". A masterful work-up lyrically, musically and emotionally. I ball my hands into fists with joy and triumph during passages when I'm moved to sing or shout. This album is solid music, Joel means every word he sings, intends every vibrating string or trembling drumhead. I would almost term this a concept album, I can feel his musical themes moving throughout the entire album, lyrically matching the darkish tones and phrases, melding them into almost one whole piece. Um, I liked it.
