Album Notes

Born in a small Mid-western town, Joe McDermott moved to Texas as fast as he could. It was while completing a fine arts degree at the University of Texas that Joe fell in love with the live music scene of Austin, Texas. Soon after graduation, Joe was a part of that scene and quickly made a name for himself as the premier songwriter and performer for the school-aged set. He was barely out of college when he penned the local favorite tunes, “Don’t Drop a Brick on Your Foot” and “My Family Car is a Helicopter”. For the first ten years of Joe’s musical career, he kept his music exclusively in the Austin area while raising his family. However after earning numerous national songwriting awards, he now travels from Texas to Toronto! The recognition continues to grow. His hit song, “Baby Kangaroo” won second place in the children’s division of the International Songwriting Contest. In regards to his career in music, Joe recently said, “As nice as it is to be praised for my music, my favorite experience is with my guitar before a crowd of children, because I can never predict what kind of zany magic will unfold.”

not only for the kids

The music Joe McDermott makes isn't just kid stuff. I guess the key is that Joe doesn't write down (or up) to any audience, young or old. His repertoire covers a surprisingly wide range of musical styles, and some close attention to his guitar playing will reveal a superb musician. But he still somehow retains that outlook of a child. You'll want to dance along with your kids to the funny stuff, and some songs say things to parents that only a parent could articulate. Some have even been known to cry listening to "Great Big World." If you have children, I dare you not to.
