Album Notes

Joe Moe's MAINLAND is filled with often curious, always beautiful songs and amazing musicians and artists including Van Dyke Parks, Dylan Hostetter (Chanticleer), Ogre (Skinny Puppy) and many others. MAINLAND was arranged and produced by Cheez Masheen (Michael Webster, Marc Doten and Brian Woodbury).

"Joe Moe is descended from Hawaiian music royalty - grandson of pioneers Louisa and Pulu Moe and grandnephew of Rose and Tau Moe. Hawaiian traditional and pop culture strings the songs on this debut solo album into a melodic lei of Cinerama scope. Similarly, the magical pull of the island homeland threads through the lives of Southern California's large Pacific-Islander community living in the shadow of that ersatz Mauna Loa, Disneyland's Matterhorn. Former lead singer of a number of experimental SoCal ensembles such as The Native Shrubs of the Santa Monica Mountains, Joe Moe's musical 'ohana here includes high priests of contemporary music of the American southwest. Farther west. Keep paddling." - John Goss (cd liner notes)

Joe Moe's MAINLAND is very enjoyable.

Joe Moe's sings from a varied songbook. The ones heard on this CD are playful and imaginative, wistful and regretful, joyful and loving. My favorite tracks were "Cowboy," "Lotis Festival," and his cover of The Roches' "The Married Men." I play this CD from time to time, but often in the summer, in my car's CD player. Perfect "drivin'-around-in-the-oh-so-bright-day" music!

It's an amazing CD. Everyone told me you had a great voice, but I had yet to hear it myself. My top three are Married Men, Birds Don't Owe and Talkin in Your Sleep- I've heard that one a thousand times and you have me hearing it in an entirely new way. I have a hard time picking my favorite, but

"...counterintuitive melody contours, cornering-on-one-wheel harmonies, shifts from tortured to clear pop figures on a dime; well crafted, well played...songs and arrangements this good are rare as hen's teeth. it quite made my year."
