It was late evening in a coffee shop, when an amazing sound began playing in the background.  Seldom do I hear an artist who grabs my attention so completely.  I demanded to know who it was and was astounded to find out it was my friend, Joe Choi.  I had heard Joe live many times, and knew he was an incredibly talented guitarist with a depth that could only be described as supernatural.  While those traits were not hidden as I heard his CD being played over the speakers, I was completely unprepared for the professional and addictive sound I usually associate with some famous groupie-swamped indie artist that only I haven't heard of yet.
In that moment, "Son" leapt to number one on my list of "Albums I Absolutely Must Have."
Since getting it a few weeks ago, I have been playing it over and over again...and it stays fresh.  One moment I'm getting caught by his creative rhythms and the next I'm lulled by the comforting feel of sinking into good music.
I’m very selective about what I listen to, especially since I tend to pick up on whatever emotion the artist was feeling when working on his or her project.  Often, even though I love the music, I come away feeling depressed, angry or lonely.  While "Son" has that deep, artistic sound I am drawn to, the emotion I sense behind the music would best be described as joy.  His lyrics are surprising and honest, cutting through all pretenses to reveal the raw articulation of his soul.  This is the music of a pure heart, the expression of someone who is multi-faceted, thoughtful, complex, and in love with being alive.

Joe Choi is a unique, one of a kind musician! You will not find anyone else out there with the sounds that God has put in this guy! This music, I believe is the start of something in releasing a fresh expression of worship to the Church...Joe's CD brought back to me a new expression of joy in my own life! Whenever I play it, the music and passion that are within each track lift me above circumstances...it causes a reaction within me to worship Jesus!
