Joey Murphy was born in Springfield, Missouri. He came to New York at the age of eighteen. Shortly after he arrived he joined a band called "Please". Through this band and through offshoots of this band Joey recorded albums and went on tours, U.S. and abroad. Joey's first recording session began at Mother West Studio in the mid 1990's. It was here that Joey recorded the music that was used in the "Pile of Things" video and the music that was used in Dean Bell's movie. Magda Meissner discovered Joey performing on the corner of Astor Place and Lafayette, inspiring her to produce two music videos "Pile of Things" and "Hurricane". Dean Bell, who also met Joey performing on the streets used a segment of "Foul Advocate" in his movie "What Alice Found" which screened at Sundance and Tribeca film festivals (2003). Joey has scored for the Sundance Channel's "Conversations in World Cinema: Ed Harris" and has performed on bills with Morphine, Thurston Moore, and John Zorn.
