Album Notes

Born 3 months premature, this child had no name... Just Boy. Born with a rare lung disease, his parents wanting to give him a strong name, they decided on John. John Boy was born.
This NYC based artist blends rock/pop/goth/alternative/dance to create his "dark pop" sound. Filled with raw emotion, sexual expression, sexy darks vocals, and edgy lyrics...he shines a blinding light on loneliness, comformity, fear and confusion. Called a "new recording star" by Next Magazine, John Boy's been compared to Nine Inch Nails, Robbie Williams, Incubus and been called the male version of Madonna and P!NK. John Boy's first EP, "Space Junkie", a dance-heavy album with twisted humor but also depth, was produced by Shane Faber. It caught the ear of top NYC promoter Mark Nelson which led to a fully staged theatrical tour of the New York club scene at top venues including Limelight, Cheetah, Exit, Splash, Hush, Ohm and after-parties for Michael Jackson and Madonna (performing with Donna Delory & Niki Harris- Madonna's long time back-up singers). His new Full length cd, "Choked Not Broken" was released in August 2005. This second release, produced by Jason Paige, reveals a darker side to John Boy; his music reflects a harder edge, trading in his club sound for gritty rock hooks and provocative lyrics. Jason Paige, who's worked with Enriques Iglesias and Ashanti, describes the unique sound as "Britney meets Marilyn Manson".
With concert performances in the vain of Madonna, he not only conceptualized and choreographed his own material but has also choreographed for other artists including Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, West Wing, Pink Panther). John Boy is an artist that speaks from the truth of who he is and what he feels. He takes you on a musical journey and pushes the envelope the whole way down. John Boy has redefined the pop/rock genre.
"Finally someone who is gritty, dark, confused and dirty...and isn't afraid to sing about it." - CityMusic.

REVIEWS

Choked up & reminded not to ever be broken...
author: Jenny
I was very pleasantly surprised with all the songs on this CD! As someone who feels that lyrics are pivital to the experience of relating well to any song...well, these songs did not disappoint! The richness and layers of emotion are very appealing to me ... the honesty and integrity expressed are refreshing. It was raw but not totally unpolished. I loved the contrast between John's and Kathy's voices and I loved the mood shifts from track to track. My top picks: Missing, Took from Me, Swallow and Freak! This music reminded me of my own artistic passions and struggles. I was lucky enough to be found by him on myspace and I'll make sure that other people find him! -Jenny

Choked Not Broken - believe the hype
author: T-Dawg
I may not be the best person to ask when it comes to edgy, poppy, dancey music, as I'm probably the biggest geek I know... I mean, if I saw John Boy on the street, I might be more than a little afraid of him... but that might be the best argument for me, because I can't get enough of this CD. The artist has culled the most rangey of influences to compile an album that is nothing short of stellar. His songwriting is intelligent but not self-important, fun but not juvenile and throughout the whole, the album does not take itself too seriously, yet still evokes elements of yearning, loneliness and ultimately redemption. The production value on each track is, in my uneducated opinion, really phenomenal, layering sound over silence over sound and his vocals are haunting. John Boy's low sitting baritones are sometimes reminiscent of Eddie Vedder but as part of the larger sonic palette, take the listener to a completely new place. These days it seems like anyone with a modicum of talent and a computer can re-create what we've all heard on the radio before into an album that appeals to the masses and turns a buck. But what John Boy has created goes a step beyond and redefines the pop/dance genre. This certainly isn't intended as a sonic comparison, but I haven't seen anyone attack the masses with this much precision and musical understanding since Prince- another guy who, if I saw him on the street, I might be a little afraid of...
