"At its core, Goldman’s music has a welcome gentleness – a spiritual optimism. This quality suggests something of a jazzy monk, and it imbues Goldman's summery, uncluttered compositions on Outside The Box, which features his band Quadrangle (and several guest artists). But it also informs songs where it would seem out of place, such as those that swing in on a two-horn front line and bubble along to a swinging post-bop beat. From this dichotomy, Goldman and his crew have constructed a deceptively easy and delightfully relaxed set, full of strong writing and perfectly attuned playing.
The opposing nature of Goldman’s influences requires an extremely perceptive rhythm section. Quadrangle has that in bassist Patrick Mulcahy and drummer Cory Healey, whose finely textured rhythms power the band with admirable reserve. As sometime rhythm player, guitarist Scott Hesse is rock-solid when supplying comp chords; as soloist, Hesse is fluid and glittering – and especially inventive on Goldman’s song named for him, “Hesse Steps.”
In his own solos, Goldman avoids the fancy and flashy, preferring to use his clean, dark tone and evenly spaced phrasing to craft simple and correspondingly strong statements. Rather than cow the listener with big technique, his solos advance each overall performance..." ~ By Neil Tesser, Examiner.com
